Let me think about all this before I reply. When I removed the picture
from the folder that was listed under Browse, they were removed from
the list. You may have to edit the Registry. Are you familiar with
doing that?

Yes I can do that. For now tho I've solved the problem simply by moving
everything from the 'my pictures' folder to another. By incorporating
this 'feature' however, XP has effectively rendered the 'my pictures'
folder useless unless I want everything in it displayed in the
desktop/properties/background listing.
It does seem like you've found a little "bug" in our Operating System.

And who said I was good for nothing..
Once you list a picture as a Background Picture it doesn't go away.

Anybody else reading along have any suggestions?

Once you cleared the "my pictures" folder, the pictures were no longer
listed? If that is the case, create a empty folder and then use the
Browse button to go to that folder or just browse to the default folder,
C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper
and then see what happens when you put one picture back in the my
pictures folder.

Good thought, but no, any pics in the 'My Pictures' folder including
sub-folders will be listed. You'd have thought that the designers of XP
would have considered that users might have hundreds of photos/pics in
that folder (I have almost 3,000!)

I just checked by copying three pictures into My Pictures and sure
enough they're on the list.

There has got to be a registry hack to fix this because some people,
like you, have a lot of pictures in that folder. This is stupid!

I can't find any way to change this behavior. It appears one can use
TweakUI to change the location of the My Pictures folder and move all
your pictures to that folder. I can't verify this.

The other option is to store your pictures in a different folder.

That's the easy option that I've chosen. Re-naming the 'my pics' folder
doesn't work either. It just causes desktop properties to become, well,
'confused'.

It certainly is!

I'll join the chorus of doubters. I have well over 5,000 .jpg files in My
Pictures and sub folders; NONE of them show up in the Desktop lists except
for one I set to my wallpaper.

You need to disable the active desktop
Open the control panel, open display properties then click the desktop tab,
and then click the customize desktop button then click the webtab in the
desktop items window make sure all check boxes in this window are unchecked
hope it helps.

So we're back to square one then. And the question remains.. how did it
happen, how to stop it happening, and how to fix it if it does happen,
as it clearly has happened with some users, myself being a case in point.

Seems to be running 50/50. It may well be fixed only by a clean install; as
ugly as that can be. Earlier, 'relic' mentioned installing a Desktop Theme
as a possibility, has that been ruled out?

I did the same.
BTW, I believe that all of those that I moved over to a new folder from
My Pictures were also in my Picassa Folder...could that be a clue?
Pete, are you using Picassa also?

Ok, I have a PC here that has just had XP installed, no themes or
anything added. I'll check it out and report back. btw, this is a
Microsoft ng. It's hard to believe no one here knows about this.

Doesn't really matter, but it's a free photo organizing program.
Has a fair edit program, while you are working in it.
I thought that the photo program may have been involved.
Glad it isn't, I want to keep the program.

I'm reading from alt.os.windows-xp. I've seen very little accurate
information come out of the microsoft.public groups, they're famous for
someone giving bogus advice and then everyone parrots the bad information.
Another good group is alt.windows-xp.
