Windows Vista with 1Gb Memory -- A Satisfactory Experience?

I understand your delimma all to well.

As you point out, 98 is working for you just fine, so why change it.

yes, as you've pointed out, MS wil no longer be providing security patches
for 98. However.......

You might want to keep in mind, that if you wanted to upgrade your current
system to run Vista, there will be several different versions of Vista
starting with Vista Basic at the low end, all the way up to Vista Ultimate,
with each one requiring a bit more muscle to run it properly.

Depending on what you use your system for, You might be able to use Vista
Basic along with 1gig of ram and be done with it.

However, if you feel that you'll need 2gig of ram, then consider how much
money you might end up spending to upgrade your current system.

2gig of ram $150?
Copy of Vista $150?? (nobody really knows just yet)

which would mean spending $300 or so on your current system.

a complete new system can be had these days for not a whole lot more than
$500 and you would end up a whole new system, and you could keep your
current system.

Perhaps another alternative would be to forget Vista, and just buy a current
copy of XP or even Windows 2000, add your second stick of 512meg, and be
done with it.

on 3 Gig Vista 64 bit is suite-de-sweet

Why go for a 1 Gig to 2 Gig upgrade?

Try to aim for the maximum supported on the mobo?

That's exactly the problem. I have an AMD64 socket 754 system
(single channel memory) with only 2 memory slots and one slot has a
512 meg stick of ram in it. If I upgrade to 1 gig then I only have to
add another 512. If I go to 2 gig, then I have to replace the whole
bunch and 2 gigs is kind of pricey right now.
Of necessity, my computing is on a budget. Right now, this computer
is screaming along running W98SE (Why upgrade the OS if it: 1. runs
all your programs and 2. you can still get the security patches?).
But now, the security patches have stopped for W98 and I'm forced to
upgrade -- I guess I'll wait for Vista rather than get a copy of XP.
I just don't want to go back to a sluggish, slothful, torpid or
hebetudinous computing experience.
Right now, it looks like it's gonna be 1 gig for me.

1GB might sound good now. If I were you, I'd hold out on the beta, start
saving for the full 2GB expansion, and pray you won't need more than
that when "Made for Vista" applications start popping up all over the
place. Various versions of the beta have varied slightly in memory usage
for me, but anywhere between 300-600MB right after startup is the norm.
That means 1GB is gonna be eaten terribly fast if you should venture
into starting a game, for instance.

I'm at 1GB at the moment, and it's not fun. I'm a power user, sure, so I
may have a bit extreme requirements. But to put it this way - I'm saving
up for 4GB. I consider 2GB to be the "generally recommended" RAM size
for Vista as it looks now. Much like 512MB was when Windows XP came out.

Yes, Windows Vista Build 5472 works just fine for me with only 1 GB of Ram
on my Dell XPS 600.
