Windows Vista upgrade disk

Seems to depend on the OEM, Colin. Some appear to be using third party
fulfillment operations to provide the standard package. Lenovo even has an
option where you merely go out and purchase the upgrade package and send in
the receipt for a full refund. The latter is interesting since it represents
the only example I've seen for a free upgrade from XP Home right to Vista
Home Premium.

No Jeff, they are not officially monitored by Microsoft.
When Microsoft employees are here, they do so on their own time.
An exception , which you seem to vaguely imply, is the managed newsgroups.
But even those only apply to current subscribers who are also properly
registered in the newsgroups.
The specific newsgroup also has to be managed since not all newsgroups are.
There is no expectation or requirement that anyone from Microsoft get the
suggestions.Read the information referring to Managed Newsgroups for
details.
You will discover there is no reason to expect Microsoft to get Jon's
message from these newsgroups.
That is why Jon did the right thing and contacted Microsoft through the
appropriate channel.

Furthermore, the chance that an employee from the specific product group
desired for a specific message is slim to none.
Read my post again, you seem to have missed a few details.
There is no requirement or expectation that a Microsoft employee seeing a
message forward it to the appropriate product group.

message from these newsgroups.

Hi Jeff,

Monitored? No, they aren't. There is an occasional post by a 'softie, but
that is done voluntarily and on their own time. No one actively monitors
these public groups, though some may look in from time to time.

Now, Technet and MSDN groups available to those with paid subscriptions are
a different story. Those have employees assigned and paid to monitor and
respond in. Don't confuse them with these public groups.

Umm,

If having an appropriate MSFT employee respond to a post of a registered
technet subscriber;within 24 hours; is not monitoring a ng; Jupiter; then I
don't know what you consider monitored..
O.k.
Maybe not these specific Vista one's, yet.
But trust me;they will be.
And it's not vague; whatsoever.
Your blanket statements are starting to annoy Jupiter,
as is your flippant attitude
Don't need ta reread Jupiter; as I am VERY aware of what's up.

Psst.
Been around them a bit; some of which, ng's; you'de might suprised to learn
(ask some of your constituents)

Jeff

Rick,

Same exact ng's..
Not Vista;yet

Jeff

Correct. Gateway, Dell, HP, all do their own customizations but the smaller
system builders are not likely to mess with it. I was reading the long list
of OEM's and there were many variations on the theme both in procedure and
pricing, whether or not they add shipping and handling, and so on.

The big houses will most likely provide a specialized dvd that is the
standard upgrade dvd customized to only operate on the model machine you
purchased. I know Compaq did that when they were selling machines in 2001
with ME preinstalled and were providing upgrade coupons for XP Home. I
bought one. I wound up buying XP Pro (full edition) and doing my own
upgrade. Had a bit of a problem with drivers at first but it came out well.

Read the last paragraph of my post and also read Ricks post.
The question was asked in this Vista newsgroup.
Whether this newsgroup will be managed in the future is irrelevant.
If the newsgroup is not managed today or the question is not asked by a
properly registered subscriber, there is no expectation of an answer.

Also the managed newsgroups are "to get answers to your break-fix
questions." and the OPs suggestion does not apply.
So there is no requirement or expectation even if the group was managed and
the user properly registered.

Read this for more details:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ms772427.aspx#bp_sd

And that takes us back to my original reply to the OP.
The OP stated he communicated with Microsoft through an appropriate channel.

fine- i give-lol
psst, just quit makin blanket statements-it doesn't suit ya well.
ya really need ta take some time off
lol

I'm sorry, but you are not correct. Please note that this ng is hosted on
msnews.microsoft.com. That is the public server and no ng's on msnews are
managed newsgroups. All exist for peer-to-peer self help. Managed
newsgroups are on servers like privatenews.microsoft.com and others.

The Core 2 Duo box is going great guns. XP Pro x64 is doing so well on it I
decided not to upgrade it to Vista for a while. The AMD64 x2 box however
absolutely rocks with Vista x64. No hassles with rtm whatsoever.

So,
IYOH,
is 64 the way to go?
Not lookin for awhile yet, but since you've been playin with one, whatcha
think?

Jeff

That's incorrect, the MSDN site says:

"There are more than 220 MSDN Managed Newsgroups currently being offered
as part of the NNTP USENET public newsgroups. Because the MSDN Managed
Newsgroups are part of the NNTP Public USENET hierarchy, you are not
required to log on to Microsoft to gain access to these newsgroups. For a
list of MSDN Managed Newsgroups please visit"

I've left the link off because I think you need to be logged on to see it.

If you're a technophile or buying a new system, yes. Just to do it, no. XP
Pro x64 is not an upgrade to XP SP2, just an alternative. They are feature
identical. Having said that, x64 is the stablist OS I have ever seen. It
just not go down like x86. The reason is that it was built on Windows
Server 2003 SP1 as a code base and not on XP x86. If you are moving up to
Vista then I would recommend x64 from the beginning.

My original plan was to get Home Premium upgrade and Word 2007.
I was until a few days ago thinking of upgrading to Vista ULTIMATE and
Office Home and Student.
If the "upgrade" version is the way it appears to be (No boot from DVD,no
clean install) I may even end up deciding on maybe JUST getting Word 2007
and stick with XP.
