And yet another reason to stick with XP.

Or buy a Mac ;-)
£89 to upgrade from "Panther" to "Tiger". And a "family pack" licence for 4
or 5 machines in a home for a small amount more.

Bendover so we can take a look.

I can get XP Pro for less than that. I already have three PCs. Macs
aren't cheap you know :-)

Now that's something MS should do. Three new macs aren't exactly in our
budget.

oops; no

Robert,
Especially with MSFT going with SPP;or whatever theyre calling spying
these days; that option; is looking more attractive.

Hi BChat, we meet again!

This is the actual price that you CAN pay NOW if you pre-order! Not
something I would do personally! And, again for interest only, Vista
Ultimate Upgrade is "priced" at £275!

yep. I traded my windows laptop when that needed replacing, and i'm finding
less and less things i need to keep a PC for for the desktop.

Amazon in USA has pricing out and is no where close to $600! I think they
have it wrong over in England!

Beck,

Windows XP Pro, when first released in the UK was £289.99. Vista Ultimate
has quite a few features above and beyond what XP Pro offered when first
released.

Mind you this is RETAIL pricing, and OEM pricing will be quite a bit less.

Not to mention that there are other tiers of Vista available.

There really is no analogous version of XP for Vista Ultimate...

Still ridiculous Bill
$600 USD for an o.s.?
LOL

Yep and XP was too expensive aswell.
I know they put alot of hard work into building it, but come on?
They wonder why people turn to piracy...

Or to Linux

US pricing is US$399 for full version. Once again, it's rip-off Britain
time ;-( No wonder I emigrated......

All these prices that are being discussed are retail prices (what the stores
will be asking for it) But does anyone know what the wholesale price is ?
I'm sure depending on which country Vista is being sold in, that there are
different issues to considder like sales tax consumer taxes and various
surcharges and store markups.

And a lot has been said in newsgroups but has microsoft actually come out
and stated the wholesale price at any stage.

Don't just convert the pound to US Dollars. Pricing in the US is different.

Vista Ultimate in the US is going to be going for around $449.99 if all the
resellers are correct with pricing.
Vista Professional Edition is more or less analogous to Windows XP Pro and
should be retailing for $341 or so which is actually LESS than Windows XP
Pro was.

Vista Home Premium is probably going to sell for $269.00 which is $25.00
more than XP Home was, but a lot more of the features than it ever had...

Don't forget Vista Ultimate will also include quite a bit of goodies, with
such possilbities as free music, free movies, different level of product and
support. Microsoft has said that Vista Ultimate is aimed at high-end PC
users, geeks and such.

With Vista's new anti-piracy features, they won't be having much fun.
Software piracy is illegal and is a crime.

People have been saying the same thing since Windows 95 was released.
Linux's market share still hasn't moved.

No one is forcing you to buy Windows Vista.

Will I? Yep, it can do what I need it to do, something's which Linux can't
do. And if it does what I need it to do, no need to look for an half
alternative that may do what I need it to do if I fight with it enough.
