Windows Vista RC1, May 2nd?

Very true. Beta 2/RC0 are very different milestones - RC0 is when there are
no big bugs left, and their ironing things out. Beta 2 is generally a public
preview...

.... so Paul Thurrott is as ever, talking out his arse most probably.

Well, it's May 1st in British Summertime, and they're nowhere near RC0 let
alone RC1 yet. Expect Beta 2 within the next few weeks though.

Oooh right - I thought it *was* 2007 for a few minutes there!! Nah, it'll be
ready to buy by February 2007 (according the current time scale). RC0 is
probably expected around August/September time if you think about it.

So why on earth will it take so long to adjust the rest of the editions for
consumers? :os

Because they would need an extra million people on helpdesks over Xmas
to handle the nervous breakdowns when people boot up a Vista-laden
computer for the first time.

To me this sounds like another Microsoft Mistake that they are about to
make, considering the fact that so many of their Official Microsoft Windows
Vista Beta Tester's are currently AWOL (Inactive).

P.S. It is really about time that Microsoft give us MSDN Subscriber's
Builds 5342 and 5365, so that we can find all of the Bugs that the Official
Microsoft Beta Tester's (Active and Inactive One's) are not Reporting to
Microsoft.

Because the OEMs don't have enough time to prepare for the holiday season,
this included training their support folks as Mike mentioned and just
marketing their PC's on a timely schedule with Windows Vista. Also, few of
the big OEMs came out and agreed with this move, DELL, HP, Gateway. Vista is
being completed on schedule.

Im thinking that perhaps Microsoft Operating System Betas should be released
to the general public (Or at least MSDN Connect subscribers) at the same
time as MSDN Subs. Other beta programs i have taken part in i have thourily
enjoyed (AKA Visual Studio 2005), but because i am still in full time
education i cant pay for MSDN subscription...

Tom

P.s. If this comes out on May 2nd! GOOD!

There was talk (starting a long time ago) about skipping Beta 2. In the end
(as someone already implied) it really doesn't matter. You could
(theoretically) have no betas and 500 RCs. While tradition says that RC and
beta 2, etc imply certain conditions, in the end they are not set in stone.

If you have to have 500 RCs then your build-quality analysis is
completely shot to pieces. An RC is a "Release Candidate", so unless
bugs of a certain severity are found, the build is considered fit to be
released to market. At this point in the cycle, changes to the product
are highly controlled and require buy-off at a high level.

Uh, yes they have. Build 5231 is called Beta 2.

It's very unlikely. May 2nd is in 2 days time from now on (well, where I
am anyway, British Summertime), so it's very unlikely. They haven't
released Beta 2 yet, which is another huge milestone in any project.

RC0 (Release Client 0), is the stage where they've finished bug reporting
(generally) and are ready with the final tweaks. RC1 (Release Client 1) is
best described as "the builld you get before release to manufacturing".

Expect Beta 2 sooner than any RC build.

It's not. The build-print at the bottom right is just a "figurine" for what
it is. It's actually Beta 1 so I don't know why they haven't changed it yet.
All these build's we've recieved so far says "Beta 2" except the first ever
build released, being 5112.

Check these for a demonstration (sorry for the long URL's)

Well, May 2 came and went ...

"first ever build released, being 5112"
Build 4074 was released, and I assume it is earlier than 5112.
