Why would anyone choose a 3rd party site for download?

It's not free at all. You paid for WMP when you purchased Microsoft
Windows. It is an inherent part of the operating system and the operating
system will not run without it - unless you live in the EU where, apparently
due to some unknown electro-magnetic phenomenon in the atmosphere, Windows
runs just fine without WMP.

WMP 11 is simply a marketing update intended to simplify the UI so that
people will use the online stores to generate revenue for Microsoft.

Dale

dale, most companies do what they do to generate revenue. My guess is that
if you have a job, you also do your work to generate revenue. Where is the
problem with that?

Dale said:
As I said above, it's not free, it's just available at no additional cost.

A hair-split iif ever there was one! You seem to be one of those people who
bitch and moan because Microsoft wants to make a profit -- "Bad! Bad! Bad
Corporation!"

But, hey, if you are truly as altruistic as you want others to be, let me
know what work you do for free or almost nothing, and I'll find something
useful for you to do.

Nothing at all is wrong with generating revenue. If you read my posts in
the Vista groups, you'll see that I am a vociferous defender of Vista and of
Microsoft's right to sell it at a profit. The problem with WMP is that the
emphasis on the stores was at the expense of features that users expect and
require from media players and, by virtue of its inclusion as an inherent
part of the operating system, we're forced to purchase WMP, marketing
efforts and all, whether or not it meets our needs.

That lack of features makes WMP useful as a tool for buying DRM'd media but
not for playing and managing that media. But having already purchased WMP,
most users won't spend the money for a higher quality media player. And
because all Windows users outside the EU have already purchased a media
player (WMP), the market for a better third-party player doesn't exist even
though the technological need exists.

And, no, I don't consider iTunes or Winamp to be competitors or improvements
to WMP. They're just alternatives having some better features and some
worse features. But if WMP was unbundled from the OS, there could be an
entire new class of sixty to one-hundred dollar media players and that
competitive force would improve all media players including WMP. You'd have
more resources, more budget, and more satisfaction in your work.

Make WMP optional and then Microsoft would be very much right to charge for
the product. In doing so, I would hope they'd price it two ways: a higher
priced version that included no adware functionality (I'd gladly pay $100
for a quality product) and a lower priced version ($29?) where the price
reduction was offset by adware.

Dale

Read my posts on the Vista group. You will see that I am completely
supportive of Microsoft's right to sell their products at a profit. My only
point is just what I said: WMP is not free. You paid for it when you paid
for Windows. Though it wasn't said in this thread, there are often comments
that complaints about WMP are not legitimate because it was free anyway.
It's not free at all, any more than Windows is free.

And the difference between "free" and "no additional cost" is not a hair
split. I cannot get WMP 11 if I have not already purchased Windows. It is
available at no additional cost. It is not available for free - unless
you're one of those who think that pirating Windows is morally acceptable
because the Venezuelan government ruled that it was ok to sell knock-off
cassette tapes of American copyrighted material for a dollar in Buenos
Aires.

You thought that if people weren't fooled the first time, that they'd

Go away, you troll. Nobody in their right mind would get it from you
when it is freely available from Microsoft.

Not a troll, but certainly a bottom feeding bass-turd

Well, obviously I have Windows on my computer if I'm on this board looking
for help and tips about my computer, so why wouldn't I download this
software from Microsoft, who provides it to me for Free and SAFELY?

Right on Alan!

If you purchase a PC with the Windows OS, it's FREE

If you purchase another type of computer, what difference does it matter if
it won't play. There is a lot of Windows software, from MS and others, that
isn't free.... this is, as well as other fun stuff.

There are no computer manufacturers giving away legitimate Windows for free.
Dell and HP use the term "included in price" for their standard version of
the OS. They pay for it and the cost they pay, along with a profit, is
definitely included in the price.

As for all that other "fun stuff" you say is free, you're mistaken again.
Fun stuff like Kazaa and Napster are responsible for more stolen passwords
and more hacked computers than any virus ever produced to date. Fun stuff
like WeatherBug, HotBar, the original Napster, Kazaa, etc. are all simply
tools for installing adware and spyware. Rather than charging you the price
for that "fun stuff", the companies who develop those applications charge
the corporations who profit from collecting and reselling your personal
information for the development of that "fun stuff". You are paying for it
by giving access to your PC and personal information as well as by reduced
performance from your PC and your Internet connection while paying the same
price. Less performance for the same price is a cost. And you pay it.

I don't think that's what he said. Your refute is a classic Straw Man.

Not so. SOme "fun stuff" is free. Therefore, he cannot be mistaken.
Fun stuff like Kazaa and Napster are responsible for more stolen passwords
and more hacked computers than any virus ever produced to date.

Is htis your opinion or a fact? If it's a fact, please provide proof to
support your claim. Thank you.
WeatherBug, HotBar, the original Napster, Kazaa, etc. are all simply tools
for installing adware and spyware.

Agreed. I'd ad Real Player and Quicktime Movie Player to that list.
You are paying for it by giving access to your PC and personal information
as well as by reduced performance from your PC and your Internet
connection while paying the same price. Less performance for the same
price is a cost. And you pay it.

Tha'ts reasonable argument, but it fails to recognize that when someone
says "free" in the context it was used in the above thread, it means "don't
have to exchange money for it".

It's a fact about the stolen passwords. You do the homework if you want
proof. Just remember that virtually all installations of Kazaa, Napster,
Weatherbug and HotBar include Gator. The Gator software installed a
"password protection service" where they surreptitiously captured every
password you entered and stored in their servers. Of course, they never
told you they were doing that so you never knew it but if you had known it,
you could, theoretically and for a price, contact them and recover a
password if you lost it.

While free includes "don't have to exchange money for it," "don't have to
exchange money for it" does not mean free. "Do not have to exchange
anything for it" would accurately define free. If you think I am wrong, try
living your life on the barter system and see how long it is before the IRS
is knocking at your door (assuming you live in the United States). Even so,
you do exchange money for the OS in your OEM PC that includes Windows. And
the OP very specifically said if you buy a PC with Windows it is FREE. By
free, he meant...well... free.

If you think you do not exchange money for that OS, try to get the
manufacturer to send you the Windows disk without having purchased the PC.
Or call a third-party reseller of OEM operating systems, NewEgg for
instance, and get a disk for free or for free if you buy a power cable for a
hard drive.

I'll give you one point, though. In fact, I found your reply because I'd
come back here to make this one concession already. There are some fun
things you can get for free. And, at least for me, those fun things come
from Microsoft! Things like all of the Express editions of Visual Studio
2005, SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, etc. Those are some very powerful
and fun things if, like me, you're the PC guy on the Apple commercials -
I've been eyeing that book on C++ GUI development myself! LOL

Dale

Aren't you getting the idea here, Dale? You are obviously looking for a
fight or something.

A major reason for NOT using your link is that we have NO idea who you are
or what you may be REALLY offering. Since this software is already provided
for us, there is NO reason for anyone to risk going to an unproven site to
download anything.
