One other point, don't start out by telling them your router has crashed or
keeps crashing, they won't understand and might assume you mean your system
is crashing and they will be headed in the wrong direction. Tell them
specifically what is happening, that your laptop loses it's connection and
give them that error message.

The soundcard was means of exemplifying the point, it didn't mean or assume
you were having an issue with your soundcard. Have you installed anything
on XP computer, any applications that might also have been on the 98SE
machine. If yes, then it is not safe to assume everything is compatible.
Have you checked all the device manufacturer websites for the latest
drivers. It's never safe to assume any hardware purchased new came with
the latest drivers right out of the box.
The only thing running on the XP machine is MYOB.
Are you running a firewall on the XP machine, if yes, have you tried turning
it off to see if you still have the issue?
Yes. Zonelalarm. Tried that.
You have something, somewhere blocking access. Have you checked to make
sure the XP firewall is turned off? I assume you setup a network, did you
run the XP Network Setup wizard on all systems
Ran it on the laptop only. The computers were on an existing
network.
Do you have any ad blocking software or popup stopping software on the
laptop, if yes, trying turning them off and see if you still have this
issue.
Have none on the laptop.

Makes no difference, if you add XP to an existing network and you've run the
Network Setup Wizard on the XP system, you usually need to run it on all
other PCs on the network in order to properly configure those computers to
run with XP.
