I'm running Windows XP Pro on my Acer laptop and it keeps crashing my
router. Any ideas how to fix this?

The router works fine on the Windows 98 SE machines, it stops working
after a couple of pages on the Windows XP Pro laptop.

Make sure that you are using the newest firmware/drivers for the
router. You could also contact the manufacturer of the device for if
this is a known problem and if there is a solution for it.

Does have the latest firmware, contacted Acer, they were of
no help. Neither was Linksys.

What router, make and model? Did you check the manufacturer's website for
XP drivers and whether or not this router is compatible with XP?
 
I apologize, I misread the response to your post which suggested the same
fix I suggested.

Perhaps the problem is in other software or hardware:

First, be sure your antivirus software has the latest definitions and run a
virus scan.

Second, download, install and run Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com
Note: you should always be well backed up before running an application of
this type.

If your system is clear of viruses, open Control Panel, open System, go to
the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery, remove the
check from "Automatically Restart" under System Failure. This will cause
the system to blue screen instead of restarting on errors and the
information on the blue screen may give a clue as to the source of the
issue.

Open Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, look for
errors corresponding to the crash, double click the error, the information
contained within may give a clue as to the
source of the problem.

Assuming you have an XP CD and not a recovery CD, place the XP CD in the
drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility,"
the report it generates may point to problem hardware or software on your
system. If you do not have an XP CD, you can download this application
known as the Upgrade Advisor from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
Note: If you have access to a broadband connection it might be best to
download using that as this is a rather large download.

Check for the latest drivers for your hardware, especially your graphics
card and soundcard and all peripherals connected to your system. No not use
Windows Update for this, go to the device manufacturer's web sites and if
you install updated drivers, ignore the message about drivers being unsigned
by Microsoft.

The laptop is brand spanking new, the only thing installed is MYOB and
Zonealarm. The laptop has no anitvirus program on it, I ran a virus
scan through the network from another computer.

contained within may give a clue as to the
source of the problem.
I'll have to check and see if I can isolate it down to the error
occurs.

Linksys BEFSR41. Linksys claims compatibility with XP.

Maybe because the router has already crashed? I have no clue what
this means.

I should have asked this at the outset, please define "router has crashed."
If the system crashed, I understand what that is but router...I've had a
router for 3 years and it's never "crashed," well, if it did, I didn't know
what it was or recognize it as such so, what is it, define the symptoms,
what happens, what you see, error messages that appear when it happens as
opposed to the message you posted from the Event log.

This sounds like if the router and the network card do not communicate
correctly. I have a similar problem here that occurs from time to time
when a laptop (with WLAN card) returns from Standby/Hibernation.
Rescanning for the router solves the problem for me, the WLAN setup
tool provides such an option. Otherwise you can open the Properties
for the (W)LAN connection and press "OK" or disable/enable the
connection to recreate the link.

The computers work fine, the router is stops accepting anything. The
only way to fix it is to unplug the router for about 3 mintutes.
Then it works fine until the next crash.

There are no sypmtoms, in IE it just says the URL for the homepage
that IE starts with and then never connects. Unplug the router for
three minutes, plug it back in and it works fine until it crashes
again.

There is no error message. Just the indication it is trying to
connect to the homepage.

If you are on a broadband setup, usually this requires you to reboot your
DSL or cable modem as well. In other words, turn off the modem, then
shutdown the router, then start the modem, reboot so the router can assign
IP addresses, then start the modem.

This does not appear to be an XP issue. If you have a firewall, try running
with that turned off for awhile and see if you run into this issue. This
sounds like some other application is interfering.

If you have not already done so, check Event Viewer for any errors
corresponding to when this happens. Open Control Panel, open Administrative
Tools, open Event Viewer, look for errors corresponding to when you have
this problem, double click the error, the information contained within may
give a clue as to the source of the issue.

So how come all works fine on Windows 98SE but not under Xp?

with XP is the issue XP or the soundcard? My point is, even though you
moved to XP and that's where the problem began does not mean it can be fixed
in XP.

It should be noted the laptop that has Windows XP Pro was new, it came
with XP Pro. The Windows 98SE machines all work fine and still use
Windows 98SE. It is the XP Pro machine that has the problem with the
router.

Since the laptop came new with Windows XP Pro is it safe to assume
everything is compatible? The Laptop is an Acer Travelmate 240.

I have no idea about the sound card, I usually don't use it on any of
the machines.

The soundcard was means of exemplifying the point, it didn't mean or assume
you were having an issue with your soundcard. Have you installed anything
on XP computer, any applications that might also have been on the 98SE
machine. If yes, then it is not safe to assume everything is compatible.
Have you checked all the device manufacturer websites for the latest
drivers. It's never safe to assume any hardware purchased new came with
the latest drivers right out of the box.

Are you running a firewall on the XP machine, if yes, have you tried turning
it off to see if you still have the issue?

You have something, somewhere blocking access. Have you checked to make
sure the XP firewall is turned off? I assume you setup a network, did you
run the XP Network Setup wizard on all systems and make sure that any
firewalls and security software was shutoff before setting up the network.
It doesn't matter if the network runs fine, it figures into this if the
machines are networked as something in that configuration may be blocking
access. During the wizard, it asks how this machine connects to the
Internet. An incorrect response can cause issues that might block networked
access and/or access to the Internet. Usually, the correct response is
Gateway.

What's installed on the laptop, what applications are you running, have you
checked for spyware that might cause this problem. Download, install and
run Ad Aware:

Do you have any ad blocking software or popup stopping software on the
laptop, if yes, trying turning them off and see if you still have this
issue.
 
Hmm, this is a symptom. Your system has an assigned address, it must be
renewed, something done automatically. If it can't make contact with the
network, it will lose the IP address. It's possible your network
configuration is not proper but more likely the laptop is losing the address
each time it disconnects. You may have to assign it a static address rather
than letting it find it's own each time it is connected.

I'm not exactly sure of the best way to do this for your situation.
However, they might know on the network_web board as this symptom may lead
them to a solution. If you are accessing these newsgroups through a web
interface, go to the following link, select network_web from the list on the
left, select it and try your question there, explaining fully what you have
already done and be sure to include that error as I believe it may help
resolve this issue:
