tried this, got a message that the program won't work under DOS, in
any case I have to preserve my long file names.

Any other ideas?

I apologize for that poor suggestion. It's been a while since I tried
to use it under DOS. The files you are trying to undelete are short,
so long filenames is not an issue. Can you boot into DOS mode (or use
a boot floppy) and use the undelete program that is part of DOS? If
you know someone with Norton Utilities, you could use the UnErase
program to undelete just those files you note are missing.

For long filename recovery, you could make an ultimate boot CD for
Windows and use PC Inspector on it. See http://ubcd4win.com/ for
instructions.

It sounds like you need to decide if you really need to try and preserve
your files. If you do, you should let someone who knows what they are
doing, do this for you rather than taking random suggestions from
outside observers, which may or may not be good suggestions for your
exact situation. Also, keep in mind, that you may have already damaged
your files beyond repair or you may have a hardware issue, but the more
you stab in the dark, the more likely you are to pierce a vital organ
and kill something.
