I've just run ccleaner to get rid of Trojans on my hard drive and it
has destroyed my desktop and major Windows files.

don't use this program whatever you do.

Can someone tell me as a matter of urgency where I can download the
following files from Windows 98:

setver.exe
display.exe
country.sys
himem.sys
dblbuff.sys
ifshlp.sys

and win.com

thanks

Funny, I'm using it with XPHESP2 no problem.

What did you do.?

Hi
The best thing if you do not have a Windows 98 disc is to see if a
friend has one and restore those files using the restore facility in
the System File Checker. (Start/Programs/Accessories/System
Tools/System Information/Tools/System File Checker or Start/Run enter
sfc and OK it)
Good luck whatever,
Reg

I also use it(a lot)without any problems on my 98,ME,and XP Pro SP2.
Yours is the first complaint I've seen. What other disk tools do you use?

The machine can't recognise the D: drive; I was in the Internet Cafe
late last night but these are all later model machines.

Nothing I shouldn't have done according to the instructions. Caveat emptor.

Which version of 98? Original or SE?
and win.com

Win.com? Say, you *are* screwed, aren't you? :)

If you can't get the CD-ROM to work have you tried copying them from CD to
floppy disk on another computer, if you have access to one? That's if
they'll fit onto a floppy!

Or depending how savvy you are you could try putting your hard disk into
another computer and copying them over.

Does ccleaner keep a log of what it's done? It would be interesting to see
if it mentioned touching these files, or if the file system was broken at
the time which caused the Windows files to be broken.

Without win.com, there is no windows to boot up, and without Windows,
there is no SFC to run.

To Alexander: Go to www.bootdisk.com, get the appropriate (respective)
bootdisk, run this program and use it to create a bootdisk (the program
from the internet is a bootdisk files archive with automatic copying).
Use the created bootdisk on your botched machine, it has a DOS CD-rom
driver. Insert the Windows CD, copy the contents of D:\win98 to your
harddisk (into a directory that is easily reachable), change to that
directory, and run the setup.

Download "Restoration Undelete" on another system
(http://www.webattack.com/get/restoration.shtml). It runs from a
floppy so get a boot disk whle you are at it. Boot from the boot disk,
then run undelete. Put each filename in the search box, and undelete
each.

If you can get to another Win98 machine simply copy the above files to a
floppy disk, they'll easily fit. Then copy them back to your own system.
It's a very easy fix.

Thanks, will do this. As I think I explained, the machine doesn't
recognise the D: drive. I have two Windows disks, I think they're the
same version, one came with the machine but has a fault on it,
although a few months ago I managed to do a proper restore from it.
The other one was given me by the bloke who installed by broadband.

My address by the way is a_Baron[AT]ntlworld.com; I only use the Demon
one now for anti-spam.

Yesterday I found an Internet Cafe with a Windows 98 machine and
copied the missing files; they should actually go into a
sub-directory, not the main Windows directory as I thought. When I
copied them though I got one step further the machine still could not
recognise Windows. I can't use WordStar either, or any DOS command
apart from COPY and DIR and CD\

Even if I can reinstall Windows I've been told this will wipe the hard
disk and there are a lot of files on it that I want, big ones that
can't be transferred to floppy. I was going to do a back up later in
the week after I'd got rid of that damned Trojan.

Incidentally, I detected another one, downloader.stub, but it was
ccleaner that destroyed my system so please don't anyone use it, or do
so at your peril. I spoke to a friend last night who told me an
anti-Trojan program had done the same thing to his machine although he
couldn't remember which one.

All my Windows temp files have gone too.

Anyway, what I need is to save all the files on my machine with their
long file names - something which has been lost under DOS, then
restore Windows, get rid of those damned Trojans for good and back up
my system.

Hello again,

Not sure which version to download so I've downloaded the first one.
Windows 98 OEM | Alt1

If I do this and run the set up will this destroy all my files? If so
I can't do it, at least not yet. I need to be able to back up first.

Re the boot disk, the position is even worse than I thought. The
machine ignores the A: drive and says Windows must be started in DOS
mode because of a registry fault. It can read the A: drive but won't
act on the disk. When I tried to run a recovery before I got a message
can't run in DOS mode.

It depends. There are two versions of Windows 98, the first one came out
in fall 98, the other one year later. If Windows were still running, you
would have been able to tell them apart by checking the properties of
"System", the one with the many "2"s in its version number is the Win98
"Second Edition".

But now you can only check from a floppy disk, which version you have
(got), by using the dir command on several standard files.

Re the a: drive:

You will first have to enter your BIOS, find the entry for the startup
sequence, and change it, so that the first drive to boot from, is "A:"
or "Floppy", not "C:" or "hard disk" or "fixed disk". Only then your
machine will read the diskette first of all, start from there and allow
for checking the system.

If you are not familiar with diskette startups, and operating systems
that consist of white letters on a black screen, please ask an
experienced friend to help you, so that installing Windows will run as
intended.

Also, installing Windows alone, will not erase the hard disk. To get
everything off from the hard disk, you would first have to "format" it.
If you leave that step out, everything that is there, will stay. Only
those files which are installed by the setup, will be overwritten,
probably with older versions, so that after installation, you will have
to do thw Windows update, to get them into proper status.

I did that yesterday, and it didn't work. There appear to be quite a
lot of other files missing including all the temporary files. I can't
tell how many because I can't access sub-directories due to having no
access to long file names.

The OP could go to C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND and run the "bootdisk.bat" batchfile to create a bootdisk with
(hopefully) support for the CD drive. Booting from this created bootdisk allows EXT.EXE from the ramdrive D:
to be chosen to extract files from installation CD (CD drive now becomes E: drive). This might be quicker than the
sneakernet method.

If course this assumes that only the files are needed and not a repair installation.

You can often tell the version of software simply from its time stamp. Do a DIR
command in either \WINDOWS or \WINDOWS\COMMAND. If the time stamp of standard
Windows executables is 22:22 then you got Windows 98 SE.

tried this, got a message that the program won't work under DOS, in
any case I have to preserve my long file names.

Any other ideas?
