Windows Explorer has Stopped Working

With your general attitude I do not know how anyone offers help but I try to
help everyone so what can you not copy and paste etc. If you use the right
click menu you can cut/copy and paste to you hearts content anywhere on
Vista

Mr. Betts,

So you think that because I´m disgruntled with Microsoft´s expensive and
buggy OS which has / is causing monumental problems for many people, (which
is a matter of public record on the internet), that I have an "attitude"? -
Well, wake up and smell the coffee.

If you´d read this thread correctly (and other threads), you´d realise
that there are many people who have the same problem with Vista as I do, in
that we cannot just "cut/copy and paste to you hearts content anywhere on
Vista"

Do you think that we haven´t tried that?? Of course we have, and then we
see the "Windows Explorer has stopped working......."? message.

Why do you think that we are posting this problem? There is a bug in the OS
about which Microsoft have been aware of for some time and have yet to
produce a practical solution.

Geeborg.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. I
talked to someone from Dell a few weeks back and they said that because the
Vista OS is still new, there is bound to be problems. The respose wasn't what
I was looking for, but I hold no grudges against Dell. To say the least I'm
not very happy.

Your post

Define "Your post" - it's oversnipped...
is at once poignant and amusing. In a nutshell, Internet Explorer
SUCKS, go with Mozilla Firefox. Really. It's free, faster, more reliable,
and from what I hear, more secure.

What has that to do with WINDOWS Explorer?

Does anyone know if there has been any progress on this problem
of being unable to copy / cut and paste files and folders
without seeing the "Windows Explorer has stopped working......."?

It appears as if the post Geeborg replied to, has just that:

So that case appears to be fixed, and it wasn't an OS issue per se
(unless you consider a shell that integrates ?buggy 3rd-party code to
be a bad design decision)

Well, as usuall with "Just" re-install, we learn nothing there.

In what way does it fail?
What NTFS permissions are in effect for target location C:\Temp ?

That sounds like a tougher case, and similar to one I posted on
recently. I'll look for what I said there...

Things that can prang Explorer include:
- malware
- shell integrations; use Nirsoft Shell Extension Viewer
- BHOs; use IE's controls to disable these
- bad disks; ensure all removable disks and storage is ejected
- bad content; disable "gropers" such as thumbnails
- bad or hostile Desktop.ini or Autorun.inf
- bad .CPL files
- check ChkDsk/AutoChk logs; files "fixed"?
- check antivirus logs; any code files "cleaned"?
- bad user profile; try a different user account
Also, try these:
- use the simplist views, i.e. List
- look for namespace objects on desktop, kill
- compare with Safe Mode mileage
- consider using a 3rd-party shell
- consider clearing indexes, web cache, Temp, etc.

Swallowed any updates lately?
Used any registry cleaners lately?
(they can cause these sort of issues)

Upgrade of what over what?

Strange. I'm wondering if there isn't some toxic content there, if it
isn't a 3rd-party intrusion/integration that Shell Extension Viewer
can manage. Have you enabled DEP on Explorer.exe? That might cause
this, if Explorer integrations are not compatible with DEP.

Ahh... BTW, latest JRE is 1.6u2

Still not seeing much connection with the advice to use Firefox
instead on IE, given that this will not magically resolve any IE
plugins that might be affecting Windows Explorer.

Hello Tom1960,

Yes, unfortunately there are quite few people who are experiencing this
particular problem, which is causing a great deal of inconvenience.

The general public don´t expect perfection from any software programme, but
I don´t think that it was too unreasonable to expect that a simple operation
such as ´drag & drop / cut & paste´ would be able to be performed without any
problems, especially using a programme such as Vista Ultimate, which did not
come cheaply!

I am in agreement with the other Microsoft customers who think that by now,
some solution should have been developed. I suppose it´s a case of ´hurry up
and wait´.

Cheers,

Geeborg.

misterp,
Glad to hear that the indescribable thing works.

Now if DiskCleanup, as suggested by Colin, doesn't work then:
1. use the good ol' DOS approach, i.e., run Cmd.exe as Administrator,
navigate to the directory, and use the DEL command

or

my favorite, is CCleaner from Piriform. At the to of my "must have"
utilities list is CCleaner. When you see how great it is, then be sure to
visit the Piriform site again and make a donation as this wonderful program
is freeware.

Karl

This **** really works!!! problem solved!!!
