Hi Nass
Have now sorted the System Managed Size question I had to your suggestion.
What does this do and how will it help my defrag problem.

Tried changing the account to me as an administrator and it didn't work.

Did the PageDefrag and that worked on bootup.

Have downloaded and run Hijackthis. I have sent the report to you.

Regards
Ian

Hi Ian,
= About the V memory try this:
Right click on " My Computer" Icon and select properties.
On the System Properties click on Advanced Tab then click on Settings Button
under Performance option.
Then click Advanced Tab under Virtual Memory click on the Change Button and
select this Radio Button:
(*) System managed size click [OK] then Reboot your machine.

= You may need to Uninstall some unwanted programs to gain some space.
System File Checker and Defrag need enough desk space to run.

= About how to run it as admin.
Click Start >> Search >> Files and Folders >> Type in:
defrag.exe click search and let the Dog sniff lol
When the search end you will have many defrag, please right click the one in
this directory:
C:\Windows\System32 and select Run As from the list.
On the Run As Window2 Select the radio button:
(*) The Following User and select your account.
Does it help?

PageDefrag v2.32
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx

If the above didn't help then it looks like infected and you need to run a
thorough cleaning and disinfection for this machine. I will be happy if you
let me have your Hijackthis log or you can send it to one of many forums on
the internet for analysis.

Download the Hijackthis and send the report to one of
many forums for analysis and troubleshooting or you can send it to me on my
email provided at the bottom:
When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php)

Can you please send me a copy at (e-mail address removed) ,
remove the obvious to email me, note ( _ it is underscore not - ).

Hi Nass
Yes I have 4 user accounts on the machine. The reason for the defrag is
clutter and disk space. I am trying to clean up my machine so it works a
little faster too. Taking Norton Internet Security was a big leap forward in
running quicker.

I have admin rights to my machine so there should be no issue with permission.

Can you explain a little more how I should...."Try to right click it and
select run as then select admin and see if that will will run it.". Once I
understand I will try it. Where should I right click.

Thanks again for you advice.

Ian

Didn't get it Ian?

(e-mail address removed)

Please try to decipher the email address to get the right address.
Or just copy it then remove the REMOVETHISCAPS to get it correct.

Do you have more than one account on this machine? What happen when you run
it in Safe Mode?
Did you tried to repair/install the Defragmenter? Why you defraging so much
and what the reason ( disk space, clutter)?

This either can be because an Account limited or an infection on this
machine which preventing you from Gaining control on the machine.
Try to right click it and select run as then select admin and see if that
will will run it.

Hi Gerry
I hope my rsponse answers your posting.

I have used two different third party defragmenter at diffeent times -
Auslogics and Defraggler. If I remember correctly I was using Auslogics
(Free Version) first and the Windows defrag worked if I initiated that
process instead of Auslogics. I did not check if Windows Defrag worked with
Defraggler after I unistalled Auslogics.

I've followed your instruction below using the "defrag c: -f" command at the
C Prompt and get the following message:

"The system cannot execute the specified program"

I've had a look a the KB article 283080 and although I basicly understand
what is being said, I'm not making progress with it. The Defrag.exe
application on my C;\ Drive brings up another error message:

"Windows cannot open this program because it has been prevented by a
software restriction policy " etc.

I've noticed that there are many different ways on XP to open up the Defrag
Window. Opening the program/window is not an issue. The problem is getting
the buttons when depressed to start the analysis/defragmentation process.

I trust I haven't made the problem more cloudy by my response.

Have you been using a third party disk utility or third party
defragmenter?

With Windows XP two defragmenters are provided. The command line
defragmenter can be run by selecting Start, Run type "cmd" without
quotes and click on OK. Type "defrag c: -f" without qotes and depess the
ENTER key. When th process has completed type "exit" without quotes and
depess the ENTER key to return to Windows. The command line defragmenter
is alternative way to defragment. Read KB Article 283080 for switches,
which be used with the defrag command.

Hi Gerry
Thanks for your response.

No error message appears at all. The buttons will depress but nothing
happens. Not sure what you mean by command line alternative. If you
can explain I will let you know.

Chkdsk is working. Says to use chkdsk /f to fix file issues but then
says cannot do it as the volume is being used by another process.
Not sure what this means. Have set it to run the next time the PC
restarts.

Can you explain what you mean by "New Command Line Defrag.exe". Is
this an option to possibly correct my problem.

Thanks again

What error message appears when you try to analyse or is there just
no response?

Does the command line alternative work?

Description of the New Command Line Defrag.exe Included with Windows

Does chkdsk work?

Changing to a Windows Managed Pagefile will not help solve your problem.
Whilst it is commonly recommended it leads to more rapid fragmentation
of free disk space than if a minimum=maximum pagefile setting is used. A
Windows Managed Pagefile leads to greater fragmentation of other files
on the volume, especially as the drive fills up.
