Is there a freeware utility that will allow me to do this, (or to run
defrag or whatever) and when its done, to close down windows?
(My current computer automatically goes off on shutting down
windows).

FWIW In XP I use a one line batch file on the desktop (it can go anywhere):
shutdown -s -t 00
Make the file in notepad and call it shutdown.cmd
(I think adding -f forces all programs to close immediately but I prefer to
let them close in the normal way)
(Note: the last two characters are zeros)

Shutdown the computer.
In NT/2000/XP this will display the standard message ¡It is safe to
shutdown you computer¢.
I don't remember having this problem when I used it.

This begs the question as to why I (we) use forced shutdowns for programs
that are resident or alive but not hung or dead.
