Greetings,
When comparing Win98 to WinXP Pro on the same hardware,
which will be faster ? Faster starting and running applications
is what I mean by faster ?

Hardware:
Abit BX133
1GHz PIII
512 MB PC133 SDRAM
Adaptec 29160 PCI SCSI Host Adapter
(2) 18GB SCSI Quantum Hard disk drives.
LeadTek 32MB GForce 2 AGP video card.

thanks,
-D

Even back in the days of Windows 98 verse Windows NT - and
from Microsoft. A computer running NT would run 20% faster.
Some of this is due to how the video system ran in each OS.
Other advantages were found in how disk drive access was
conducted.

I have some 486DX2-66 which I still run. They are still
fast enough for most applications because they run Windows NT
and not the slower Windows 98.

Nothing really noticeable however XP doesn't crash as much as Win98 and
will run that 512MB properly so having 6 sessions of IE open won't
bring the whole lot to a grinding halt.

Depends on the programs and usage.XP uses more RAM so if you use large
file manipulation then Win98 should be faster as there is also a small
speed penalty if the system is using the NTFS file system and
depending on what services you have running in XP as some are not
needed IMHO.

98 will shut down quicker though. XP seems to take great joy in saving
everything first.

Howdy!

You have no choice but to reboot Win9x every 49.7 days due to a bug in
the memory manager.

Actually (ahem) THAT bug was fixed BEFORE Win98SE made it out the
door.

And was in a service pack.

IIRC (which is possibly wrong!) the fix is in IE 5.01 and above,
also.

I dual boot and choose win98 over XP for most usage :)
You try,and post back :)

Yep most people who claim XP is "Much faster" built a faster system and
loaded it with XP. Try both side by side and get back to us! 98se boots WAY
faster, runs most apps faster, has higher frames rates in games etc.

Still using Intel 486s because they are faster using NT than
using the 'what was obsolete when it came out' Windows 98. NT
is the foundation on which XP is produced. Even Microsoft
said back then and was repeated by Dell in sales brochures -
NT OSes permit the hardware to run 20% faster. These are
facts - not a wish from those who worship obsolete Windows
98. If that 486 was running Windows 98, then that 486 would
have long been retired. Both personal experience AND word
direct from the manufacturer. NT based OSes were so superior
to Windows 98 that Windows 98 was already obsolete when it was
introduced.

I switched my OS from Win98 to WinXP Pro without
any changes in hardware, and there was a pronounced
slowdown in both OS and app loading. There is definitely
a trade-off for the increased stability of WinXP. And
ironically, my IE crashes occasionally, now, when it never
used to crash with Win98. Plus, my multi-function printer
had to use the generic WinXP printer driver, and part of
its functionality has been lost. The only reason that I
stayed with WinXP is because I need it for some of
the server courses I've been taking.

I upgraded my old Dell PIII/450Mhz from Win98 to W2K and noticed a profound
*increase* in speed with the new OS. Made me wish I'd upgraded sooner.

Have you considered turning off some of the eye candy in XP?
