as MSE (see below).

Don't be so sure. Just as an example, RedHat Linux has an errata list as
long as my arm. Out of the box it has more holes than Swiss Cheese. "Free"
is a relative term there, BTW.

If you install security software such as Microsoft Security Essentials
(MSE), your computer scans files for such things before running them. MSE,
apparently, is very good at catching potential rooting:
