Will not restart after critical update installation

I was installing a critical update (security I believe)
and my computer locked up. I manually shut down the
computer and restarted it. It whet through the system
scan and complained that the security update was not
valid, but continued with the scan. However, it will not
completely reboot. I will get to the opening Windows XP
screen (one that appears prior to the log in screen) and
then it restarts itself and repeats the process over and
over. Any help on this will be GREATLY appreciated.
