Hi Steve,

Its very nice when someone does the research for themselves, rather than
posts a new message about something that has been posted before.

Thank you for your update.

Hi Dasha,

You're actually on the wrong forum for XP, but I'll make a few comments anyway

Please confirm your system clock and Time Zone also the Date set properly,
Having it set incorrectly can cause this type of behavior.

Test this WGA diagnose test, connection to MS, that scripts working and a
new Validation tool
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

Download CCleaner and Dial-ª-fix

Ccleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com ;
Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during instªll.

Do the scans with all the check marks ºn.

Run the above remover in safe mode then Ccleaner on all 3
settings(windows, apps & issues) and clear anything found reboot and see if it
still exists.

NOTE - The first time you run CCleaner's Issues scanner you'll have to keep
running it back-to-back until it finds nothing. One scenario is a registry
key may only be a reference pointing to a completely different location in
the registry and when it's removed then that reference link is also noticed
as being invalid on a subsequent scan. It's generally a good idea to keep
running the Issues scan until nothing is listed.

There is also a third-party fix which has had good results for a number of
folks here:
Dial-ª--Fix
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix ;

Run this program with all the functions activated in safe mode. --it may
look as if the scan has frozen. DAF is actually doing lots of shoveling and
shuffling, so don't interrupt it.

Please read the page and Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to Download
Dial-ª-fix

Exit Safe Mode (Reboot)

Try the updates n0w

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut
Engel, I hope you read this, but thanks for this post as it has saved me
from going insane. I have followed your recommendations and it has worked
like a dream. I will also be making contributions to the two providers you
mentioned. Thanks once again. Regards Chris

Hi Chris M,

By rating a post as an answer, you help others find the answer more quickly,
you give the person who posted the answer credit for their contribution, and
you help increase the quality of answers in the discussion group.

Also, feel free to mention my name ;-)

Hi Engel and dean,

thank-you very much for the info u gave dasha i was having a similar
problem and it all worked perfectly.

BRILLIANT, thank you.

I have wasted hours this last week trying to deal with the problem, and only
an hour ago got onto this forum.

CCleaner didn't solve the problem but DIAL-A-FIX did; all updates went
through after I had run Dial-a-Fix on Windows Update plus accepting its
Registry fixes.

Many, many thanks,
Bill Tillick

Thank you Engel, you are WONDERFUL !!!

Many Thanks for your helpfull tips.
DAF worked magically for annoying WIndows Update problems.
Very Helpfull and efficient.

Thnak-you very much,

Engel:

You're a lifesaver. I did a system restore, followed by a repair/partial
re-install of Windows XP and couldn't download Microsoft Updates. Dial-a-fix
solved the problem. I happily made a donation to the programmer of that
software. Thanks to you for your help.

Thanks for the help. This is the third instance of this problem I have had
to deal with and this took hours off rebuilding the workstation.
