Why no FDM?

I'm just curious. Why isn't Free Download Manager on the PL2005 final
selection list? I've used it since switching to Firefox, and it works
great. Is it not eligible for some reason, or did I just goof-up by not
nominating it when I had the chance? =0

I never saw a program description for it (the necessary first step
before nomination). DLExpert received 13 votes. That means Free Download
Manager needs at least 10 supporting posts to qualify for PL2005.

If you want to go for it I suggest you post the program description in
this thread and ask for support.

What is Free Download Manager?

Free Download Manager is a light-weight, powerful and easy-to-use
application. It is designed for downloading files and whole web sites from
any remote server via HTTP, HTTPS and FTP. With Free Download Manager you'll
avoid problems related to downloading:

Connection instability. When the downloading process is interrupted you
needn't start from the beginning again. Free Download Manager can resume
broken download from where it was interrupted saving your time, nerves and
money. Some servers don't support download resuming, but Free Download
Manager will warn you about it allowing you to decide on downloading.

Connection speed. Free Download Manager splits files into several sections
and downloads them simultaneously, allowing you to use any type of
connection at the maximum available speed.

In addition, Free Download Manager allows you:

to organize downloaded files by their type, placing them in predefined

you are required to allow the program to communicate on the internet to
other locations for who-knows-what?

Have tried a bunch of them....managers....like this one best...
description does not mention keeps a history of downloads....
did not notice on any others.....

There are some things to point out in Free Download Manager.
It is set to 12 threads by default, at least in my installation, that is
far too much, and should be 5 or less.

If this number is too high there will be too much time lost in
administration of all these threads. So you will get slightly higher
speed by using a lower number of threads, and you will not get impopular
among some server admins for hogging many threads.

The server usually has a number of "download slots", that is the number
of people who can download the file simultaneously. If you use 12 threads
you use 12 download slots, and other people may have to wait until you
have downloaded the file.

That is why these downloader programs are impopular among some server
admins. Sometimes they blacklist your domain, or at least threaten to do
it.

I only use a downloader program for very big files, like a 700MB iso
file, and I never use more than 5 threads, because I know that there is
no gain in using more, and I don't want to block the server for other
users.

Download Express has a better display of the threads, but FDM has added
features like web site download, and it has a nice interface.
