is there anything to be done about this "web-bug"?
How can we protect ourselves?

Use a software firewall that allows you to block your mail agent from
accessing HTML.

(actually, the "bug" could use other ports - so instead of blocking HTML,
you should allow your agent access only to specific addresses and to
specific ports: e.g. POP/POPS/SMTP/SMTPS/ etc. and block everything else. )

I use one filter Agent. It eliminates all of my spam.

Content-Type: text/html & Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 |
text/html | multipart/alternative | multipart/mixed

Apparently spam always contains something other than plain text.
Since I do not use email in a 'business/professional' setting, I
do not receive email from unexpected sources.

All friends, anticipated newsletter etc, are approved in two
filters with higher priority settings. There are no 'subject'
or 'from' filters to maintain. Works fine for me.

Exactly as it should be. The purpose of the "-- " delimiter is to trim
off the sig when replying. Notice, as illustration, I have typed
another delimiter just above this paragraph. If anyone reading is
unclear about the delimiter, it must be a dash-dash-space flush with
left margin and on a line by itself.

Go ahead. Try a reply and watch what happens (in a real newsreader).

please tell me how to change it

Change nomail.afraid.org to hotmail.com so you can reply
(nomail.afraid.org has been set up specifically for
use in Usenet. Feel free to use it yourself.)

Max, your next line is a valid sig delimiter. Don't put these at the
top of your reply. I've put quotes around it so my newsreader
(Thunderbird) won't remove your text.

You could try this OE helper program, which may work.
http://www.webattack.com/get/oequotefix.shtml
Google for other download locations and info about it.

It may be easier just to get a real newsreader program. The
Thunderbird program is quite nice and easy to use.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/
It is also a /lot/ more secure than OE, for both mail and news.

Yes, your proper sig at the bottom was trimmed by my reader. But it
did not trim my sig from the previous post, when you went to reply. I
don't know... it may not be capable of that. Otherwise, much better.
