itsme,

a couple of questions for you,

would the motherboard fit directly into my original case, lm assuming it would, what about the power/LED/speaker connections onto the motherboard, would l need to get new connectors on them to suit the new board?

With the new case it comes with all you need for connections when you go on the site read the comments/reviews for each component;)

Do you have an XP disk? The ethernet card is built into the MOBO but you can keep the old one for later use if need be, If your going to use the old HD I would think twice about it as the one I have mentioned is compatible one with the MOBO, the drives are ok. Graphics card you need a new one to comply with the MOBO

You're heading for problems ... your 'old' graphics slot is AGP 1 ... what Graphics card are you keeping?

Everything must be compatable with the New MB or you are not going to get them to work. ;)

mmh never thought about compatability with hard drives, thought they were just plug and play, l can always give it a try, would l cause any damage trying it??

if it didn't work, would l lose all my info in the hard drive?

As mucks has said along with myself everything must be compatible or it wont work, with your hard drive after you have set up the new PC you can add the 2nd Hard drive as a slave;)

You are going to loose all the data anyway ... you'll need to re-install the OS for the new board.

Listen to itsme ... the only reason nobody else has said anything here is he has come up with a decent cheap complete system ... me, I would quite easily spend £600 of your money.

Cutting corners will result in a half baked system ... ;)

just checking the card, GeForce2-MX 32MB 4L

If it needs changing, l'l order the one you suggested, didn't realise the slots were different, as you can tell lm not up to speed on these things!!!

No argument there about the cost of the system, lm amazed how helpfull you guys are, l really appreciate the time youve taken itsme, on finding all the componants, you've went out your way to help someone you dont even know.

Sorry for being a pain about the old componants, so hard drive and graphics card are a must, will order them now

Kenny

One final thing and it is very important do you have the key for XP??????

Kenny, a lot has moved on in 40 technology years, we know our systems. ;)

Perhaps we should have made it a little clearer.

Keep the 'old' system as is, if you can, as for the components & price itsme found for you don't expect any whiz-bang system, but the system will knock spots off your old PB.

The likes of the Geforce FX5200 8X AGP Card 128MB Memory is nothing to write home about ... but, it ain't arf a big leap from what you have, and, more importantly, will work no bother with that MB. :thumb:

Same with the HD ... no great leap, in fact it's the smallest you can buy, but again, it will work with the MB & the MB will have the correct ribbon cables for it also.

Again, you need the new CPU & Ram for the new MB as your old stuff just wont fit the slots.

It's a long time since I have worked on a Crapard Hell PC, but my memory of their cases is one I'll not forget. Hence the new case, added bonus is a brand new PSU that, again, will power all you bung in there.

If your DVD drives are less than a year old, then keep them, however, the new one sugested is an "all-singing-all-dancing" and will even write double-layer DVDs ... my first CDRom drive cost £150, my first CDRW cost £400 ... crap, I'm getting old.

Anyway, keep asking & we'll point you in the best direction we can ... :thumb:

itsme,

l have the key code sticker on the side of my 'old' pc, honest l only bought it new about 4 or 5 years ago from PC world, surely it aint 40 years old haha!!!

Probably older, but not as old as itsme. ;)

1 computer year = 10 of our years
4 year old PC = 40 years in technology terms.

Now I've just remembered that you may not have a 'real' Windows CD ... a PB recovery CD will be no good.

:)

Yes thats it, but is the disc a HP or one you bought remember 1 disc =1 PC you cant use it without the key and with XP they have 1 too 1 authenticity so if you use the disc and key on the new PC you cannot use the same key on any other PC, and, do as mucks has said KEEP the old one intact?
[40yrs technology] a PC built today will be out of date next week:nod:

the XP was bought seperatly about a year ago, so are we saying that because l've loaded it into my old pc, l will need to purchase another XP for my new pc???

You will not be able to use it on two PC at the same time ... it just wont work. ;)

MS are a little short of money you see, one OS per one PC.

Should I tell you Linux is free ...

So you have the key with the XP disc that you purchased yes?
the one on the old PC was for the old windows what was it ME -2000 or what.
You can use one XP disc on any PC as long as you have different keys for each PC. if you only have one key you have to use it on one PC only, and obtain another for each PC to obtain a key. Now I am
