Where is Windows Mail?

This has got to be a really stupid question, but ever since upgrading XP to
Vista RC2 5744 everything is running near flawless except I cannot, for the
life of me, find Mail.

I have Outlook 2003 installed and working. I just thought I'd give Mail a
try for my hotmail accounts. I tried running a search for Windows Mail and
just Mail but nothing came up.

Is it disabled by default and one has to activate it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you are seeing a bug that occurred in builds prior to RC2. I have
RTM Vista and Office '07 installed and I don't have this problem. So your
best solution is to either try reinstalling Vista or install the RTM when
its available to you or go to x:\Program Files\Windows Mail and launch it
manually.

Hi Andre,

So you say I can somehow launch Mail manually by going to c:\program
files\windows mail? I go into that folder but I don't see any exe files
there. I guess this is the bug?

That's strange as I ran the upgrade from XP SP2 to RC2 5744, but you say the
bug was prior to RC2?

I already am showing hidden folders but still no Mail exe. Only application
type files in there are a Contacts Import Tool and Windows Mail Gadget. Weird.

It SHOULD be here: "C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe"

If it's not, I have no clue what happened, there isn't even an option to
remove it under Turn Windows Features on or off in the control panel.

When you do finally find Windows Mail, you will be discouraged to find that it does not support any HTTP based email accounts like Hotmail.

You should have a program called WinMail.exe in Program Files\Windows Mail
and in Program Files (x86)\Windows Mail if you are using Vista64.
As stated earlier, it doesn't support Hotmail anyway.

Its not there in server unless one installs it, but its always in client.
Outlook likes to hide the shortcut (in XP also) so users can't find how to
run WinMail or OE.

Well then I definitely do not have it. What I do have is a folder called
en-US under Program File/Winodws Mail and in that folder is a file called
WinMail.exe.MUI. If I double-click on it gives me a list of programs to try
to open it with and it does not allow me to rename it to just WinMail.exe
(Get rid of the .MUI extension). This is strange.

I wonder if this is a bug when you run the upgrade routine from XP and you
already had Outlook 2003 installed, somehow Mail isn't installed? Anyhow, I
guess since Mail doesn't handle HTTP then I'm not too bothered, only wonder
if this is a bug.

I am running Vista RTM (x86) and its right here, in the Program
Files\Windows Mail folder.

en-US is a separate folder in Windows Mail (folder).

All indications seem to point to the fact that something is wrong with my
setup. I've ran Mail before but it was a clean install of the same build.
This is the first time I tried out the UPGRADE routine which, other than this
of course, has been fantastic.

The install may well be messed up but I tell ya, other than this issue the
setup is running great. No issues whatsoever and I'm running programs that
are questionable when it comes to Vista compatibility.

RTM isn't available to me as I'm on the CPP.

Great that it is working the way you want. Since hotmail isn't supported
anyway as you wanted, try another mail program, like Live Mail.

I've got Hotmail Popper working fine on the RTM, installed no problems.

Live Mail is great I traded in my Outlook Express for it.
I had bought a subscription package to hotmail some time ago for a
reasonable fee and have used the address ever since. The great thing is with
all of my traveling, ISP service changes, etc.. the hotmail account remains
my best value. They even gave me a good amount of storage space with it. The
spam filtering has kept me from harm as well. I have nothing but praise for
it.
