Where do I mount a second HDD in a HP?

HP support suggested I just leave the second drive loose
next to the first one, but put a piece of cardboard
between the two drives to prevent static - which I
have done, but it seems like a fire risk to me.

You should report that support incident to higher-ups at HP
because their advice is completely wrong. Not only is it bad
to let HDs rattle around during operation (notice that their
maximum g-force ratings are much lower for when the disks
are spinning than when they're stationary), but it's easy
for a moving drive to short its electronics. The cardboard's
real job is to prevent shorts, not static (2 drives connected
to the same power source just won't generate high voltages
relative to one another), and while your concern about the fire
hazard is justified, much more likely some of the power driver
chips may overheat and fail.

I'd find a way to secure the second drive firmly, even if it
means drilling holes in the chassis. Don't hesitate to mount
drives upside down or sideways, as they're designed for any
perfectly horizontal or vertical orientation, and don't
overlook the six threaded holes on the bottoms of the drives

You can buy mounting brackets if you have a larger space because I would not
leave any drive loose. If you don't want to spend the money on mounting
brackets at least use duck tape or something to secure the drive.

Thanks.
I've now put it in the correct place - a vertical space between the first
HDD and the front panel, which I didn't realise was for another drive! But I
still don't have any mounting brackets. I'll investigate where to get them
from. Where I live (Solihull, UK) there is a PC World but I don't know of a
local friendly store yet.

Thanks - see my reply to Profgene's post. I still don't have it FIRMLY in
place...
