when i pick a cell, it picks cells below also, how do i stop this

I'm using excel 2007
When I pick a cell in my work sheet, it selects 1-4 cells below also.
how do I stop this, it is not merging them and what I enter does not show in
each cell, but is does change some existing contents in the selected cells???
 
Do you see 'Extend Selection' on the status bar at the bottom?

If yes, press F8 once.
