What's good about wireless optical mouse?

They receive power through the cable connecting them to the computer.
 
They are different mice. 2 of them are MS explorers but the black desk is my
test bench and has had many different mice on it.

Thinking about how they work, it would seem your desks have
too low a reflectivity. You might see if waxing them helps,
or just use a mouse pad like most do.

PS2 and USB both have 5V power delivery on the cable, that
5V though a resistor lights up an LED(S) inside the mouse.

I do. All I was saying is that they do have some disadvantages. :-)

That's a very general, and in my opinion, false statement. Others have
already pointed out why.


Maybe the environment cares. If everyone had one it would be 24 batteries
per year multiplied by 400 million Americans which is 9.6 billion batteries
just used in the US. BTW, haven't you heard of rechargables?

Ok, but i'd consider that a "desk disadvantage", not
necessarily a "mouse disadvantage. Most do not have
black->flat desks.

No, it's definately a disadvantage of the mouse. The ball mouse works on my
desk, the optical doesn't. It's a pretty minor disadvantage but it is still
a disadvantage just the same. BTW, the desk I mostly use is laquered wood of
a light color with a highly visible grain, I would have expected it to work.
The other is a fairly common black laminated desk. Overall, I'd say the
percentages of desks that optical mice have trouble with would be fairly
high.

Many? Would you say 90% have no problem? That's still 10% with a problem but
I would say the figure would easily be 25%.

I'd say that the percentage of people having a problem using
their choice of surface with an optical, is lower than those
using their choice of surface with a balled mouse.... so
it's a non-issue.

Definitely the weight, Dave. It's just too heavy - I was recommended a
trackball, but I can't get on with them and they're crap for gaming.

Not sure what you mean - you mean weight as in a physical 'weight'? I
thought the weight was down to the batteries? 2xAA cells aren't exactly
insignificant...

Yak (ironic you should name yourself after an endangered species of bovine,
when you obviously care so much about the planet...)

Batteries contain sulphuric acid amongst other things, which has a pH of
around 1 (i.e. it's very corrosive). Spent batteries have to be incinerated
because they do *NOT* biodegrade (if you buried a battery today, and then
were able to come back in an aeon or two, you'd find it looked exactly the
same as it does now, except that it might have rusted a bit and the acid may
have started to leak). Unfortunately, incineration isn't ideal because it
adds to the causes of acid rain (can you imagine what all that H2SO3 does to
the clouds) not to mention the fact that, the reaction between water (that's
H2O) and sulphuric acid is very violent.

But, if you don't mind all this, we'll gladly use your back garden as
landfill (I think the planet might protest though).

I"ve got a trackball hooked up to a system here that's not
on my KVM and find it ok for basic navigation but certainly
not anything precision-oriented like image editing or
gaming.

Either/or, certainly the batteries weigh a lot but even on
the MX300, it had a metal weight in it... the 510 does too,
