What is your favorite PC MAG program ...

rtdos

.... for DOS, WIN3x, WIN9x? I'm compiling a list of the best (and worst) of
the PC MAG Utilities. My questions are: What is your favorite (its name)
and why? ... how is it used? ... and the filename (as you would've
downloaded it from PC MAG) and possibly where you can still download it.
Also, I may have it in my collection or know where to find it. I'd like to
compile this list and post it on my website: http://www.rtdos.com

A lot of the utilities are pretty much useless under WIN 2K or XP but it
wouldn't hurt to compile this list (hey at least I'll be doing the majority
of the work) for archiving purposes (esp those who still use or have a need
to use WIN3x or WIN9x).

But if there is already such a list (OUTSIDE OF PC MAG) then will somone
PLEASE let me know? :-)

My two favourites that work just perfectly under Windows 2000 are
NetPerSec and DisplaySet.

Dupeless is my standard tool for sorting out pictures and other downloads. Weeds
out the dupes before I go into the details.

Clockrack is also very useful to me since the folks working with me are in all
different times zones. (IMO it is a pretty specialized use, but priceless when
needed. It doubles as a time sync client, too)

Filesnoop is useful. I use it in the role of the old viewplus.

Startup Cop was used until I discovered the Startup control panel by Mike Lin.
It puts them all to shame.

Conversely, some PCmag utils are pretty much duds. The worst failure of those
utils IMO is WMATCH. I really need its functionality for sync'ing directories
between PCs, and none of the other utils floating around really cuts the mustard
IMO (that is, since the original NC can no longer be used 'coz of LFNs). But the
poor WMATCH is so slow as to be completely useless. Especially on networked
directories.

On that subject, it's also worth running his StartUp Monitor --
excellent little utility.

Registry Detective "a read-only registry search facility that works in
conjunction with RegEdit". Works fine here with Win2k and Win98SE,
using it all the time. Don't know if a more recent version exist, or
if so where to find it (outside of pcmag/Ziff Davis)...

Wasn't there a site at one time that had additional schemes created by
DisplaySet but the program wasn't required? (had to merge his color
schemes into your registry)

What benefits does it have over Windows own MSConfig?

Also in any follow-ups, tell us what the program's are.
fviewer = font viewer?
btnboog = ?

Unfortunately, InControl5, the best PCutil isn't available?

P.S. Any opinion's on whether rtdos's proposal is legal?

i don't know if it is legal or not. if it isn't then i won't post the
programs themselves but nothing can stop me from posting the filenames
for the programs so that a google search can be used, right? :-)
