what does a line through a calendar time mean... or a shaded bar through the
calendar day?

"Through" what part of the time or day? What view of the calendar are you
looking at? What version of Outlook?

in the month view, there is a shaded line that extends from the left edge of
that day square to the right edge where the number is...and the number itself
is shaded blue

I know about busy/tentative appointments; it is not that... I don't see
anything for that day except this shaded bar at the top

any ideas what it is or how it got there?

And this shading is not on the current date?
