What does a PII sound like when it is getting ready to fail?

I ask because I started getting this chugging noise one day from the guts of
my puter. I cannot tell anything wrong from the op Sys. Chugging is the
best I can describe it one word. Here is a better description. You know
how when we were young we'd put a clothes pin on our bikes with a baseball
card so that it would hit the spokes as we rode? Now slow it down a little
and give it more base but sort of two toned with a dash of treble. Now
consider it doesn't happen all the time just gets very noticable on the
Net.. I'm not kidding wish I was.

That sounds like something is obstructing a fan. Open 'er up and see if
you can localize the source of the noise.

Take the case off and use a microphone like a stethoscope to locate where
it is coming from.

Right fan that's what I thought. Unfortunately I cannot identify it as the
fan because I cannot stop it. I could unplug it maybe but right now it's
too dark in there. I've squeezed it a little to see if the pitch changes
but nothing. It is open it seems to be coming from the CPU. Because if I
move that a little press on it there is a change in pitch.

hmmm thanks might work cool...I'll have to work on that. The microphone
does not go right to the speakers. Weekend project.

Get yourself a can of compressed air and blow off the fan. Often dust
collects between the fan and the CPU and creates noises

It may be time to back up the system if it’s the hard drive?

Using a paper towel tube as a low-rent stethescope works as well.

I've found that if I take a napkin, wet it under a water facet, and dip it
in a bowl of sugar, I can look through it and see a kalaidoscope.

I knew sooner or later the suggestions here how to diagnose the issue were
going to get so weird I really wouldn't know where the honest ones ended and
the ludicrous ones started. Did we perchance hit that point with the last
one?

No it's not the harddrive although that is reasonable. I can tell it is
coming from the back of the machine the harddrives are in front. It is
coming somewhere btween the 1/2 of the motherboard where the CPU is stitting
back towards the fan near the PSU. The harddruives are in the opposite
direction. It's like a constant swishing noise. swish Swish Swish and gets
loader and softer on the Net and off the Net. For example if I don't go on
the Net at all after a hour or so it will completely disappear. This is why
my first assumption of the issue was the NIC. Because that has a light on
it and that seemed to be blinking in time with the noise. I thought it was
my new 1G NIC because this issue started soon after I installed it. Not
immediately by soon after. Maybe it is because I have two NICs in the
machine where one is just sitting there gathering dust? I here I should not
have a multihomed Domain Controller (Windows 2000 Advanced Server - no DHCP
DNS only).

I find that if I put a piece of ear to my tube, it can be
used to find the noise.

What you described sounds familiar and when you mentioned the NIC I think I
have heard this before. Can you replace the NIC with another or transfer
files over a LAN and detect the same noise?

Well ya'll really gotta have mercy upon me. Unless you want to imagine me going up to the kitchen to get the sugar water and a paper napkin and bringing it down to my computer and standing there wondering how I am gonna apply the mixture to my isuue, it would be best I scratch this whole computer thing. Right?

Yes it gets more noticable when I'm on the Net or transferring files around the Network from here. I removed the 1G Nic but the noise has not gone away. It's not as bad as it was with that NIC but it's still there. Like right now I am not on the Net and no file transfers going on. The sound is gone. But if I go on the Net or start transferring files around from here it kicks in. I replaced it with the Nic I had before I put the 1G Nic in. It is just your average LAN card 10/100 Mbs. But I do have two both the same speed LAN cards. One I am not using. And it is enabled. For a time it seemed that disabling the one I don't use helped but over time the noise came back again. Although not as ferocious.

If it were me I would look next for a USB device and remove the NIC
altogether just to see if that was the cause.

I can do that. There is an issue though. The domain controller will no
longer be hooked up to the network if I do that since they don't make
Routers with a USB interface. I can hook up to my Cable Modem with a USB
but then it is off the Network. I am going to try removing the other Nic
and see what happens with that first. Tomorrow. Then try the USB
connection as the next attempt.

Do you perchance have Norton Clean Sweep installed? ;-)
