Would that fix The Resident Shield Startup problem I had on Win 98SE back in
early-2005? My eTrust AV subscription expires in a few months and I want to try
something less resource hoggish that won't prevent my computer from booting up
(like AVG did in early-2005) in Win 98SE.

ESET NOD32 works great with Vista and is very light on resources.

NOD32 is a very good product. Good marks for all around
for setup/config and performance.

Using Windows Live Onecare for a few weeks to try it out (free). So far,
appears pretty good in terms of resources etc. Not sure how effective it is
(Norton 7 ranks very high) but so far, so good.

Try AVG antivirus (http://www.grisoft.com). There is a free edition to start
with, and you can upgrade to a paid version at a later date. I had quite a
few problems with the paid version when I upgraded to Vista from XP, but
their patient tech support guys cured the problem after a few emails. I was
impressed as many other software vendors have been less than helpful when
problems strike.

AVG free almot works, you jut hae to give ita nudge now and again.

But I've been very happy with WindowsOneCare, which now runs on Vista.

Is your "nudge", a reboot?
Updates don't seem to 'take' until I reboot. The update runs, the
status does not change, running 'Update' again says I am current.

I opened AVG Control Panel after getting the error message and that made it
run.

But as you say it was always up to date!

This sounds like the "flip side" of what I get.
AVG starts and runs at boot. It won't complete the Update without a
reboot. Looking at colored checkered box (last update 2 days ago,
status) that turns gray after a number of days without a reboot due to
outdated definitions

I purchased a copy of Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007, with the
understanding that it was for all versions of Windows since W2k. However,
upon installing in Vista, I was informed that "This version is not for
Vista...". So I had to go back to their site and download the Vista product
(over 80MB). My key worked just fine, however, and there was no charge for
the Vista-capable version.

Anyway, good luck with AVG...
