The 1 year warranty is a manufacturer's warranty.
The extended warranty is probably the vendor's warranty, and
hence the purchase time frame and the terms of the warranty
would be set by the vendor. If it is a vendor's warranty, make
sure the vendor has been around for a few years and seems likely
to be around for a few more - there is not much point in buying
their warranty if they'll go tits up next month.
No, it's inside the box of the package from Western Digital. I guess they
don't want to provide long warranty still be competitive in pricing. I
might go with the extended warranty from WD since 2 of their drives I own
died just before the 3-year warranty expired.
