Vista Home Premium, SP2, WLM 14.0.0726

Not sure which newsgroup to post this :
I intend to install a webcam on my laptop in order to keep in touch with my
sister far away.
What do I need to know ? Do I have to activate another program i.e.
messenger ?
When I installed my WLM, I did not install Messenger and other related
programs.
I need to know enough to tell my sister who knows even less.
Thank you.

You can always use Skype. It's a freebie. I've used it to connect to my
brother in NC, my step-kids in NH and MA, and my nephew in TX. Works pretty
well.

Thank you.

I just installed a Logitech web cam 9000 and it was easy to install
bought off Amazon.com relatively inexpensive a $69.00 and use the
programs that came with it. The Logictech Vid program was easy to
set up and works just great. Have not tried the Skype program and
all of this is on Vista. Best to have your sister or friends get
the same camera if possible, my sister has the model 500 and she has
great connection with me also. Works great and does what they say.
Good Luck!

It really doesn't matter what the camera is. 3 of the 5 (including myself) I
mentioned all have different brands, and the 2 that have the same brand have
different models. 4 of us are running Vista, 1 XP.

Ok, here is what I need to know FOR SURE.
I know all webcams come with a program to install. What I need to know issister. All we need is to be able to talk and see each other via the webcam.
Do I need program such as Skype ? Thank you.

My Gateway came with software to activate the cam, but it required separate
software to connect to others. That's why I needed something like Skype.
Your camera software may differ. Check your manual or the manufacturer's web
site and see what they recommend.

I see. I should know more once I bought my webcam.
Thank you.

If you know what you're going to get, you can check their site at any time.
That way you'll have somewhat of a leg up before it arrives.

Install and use Microsoft Windows Live Messenger with your webcam. Have your
sister install the same program.

You don't have to install any software that came with the webcam for video
communication.

Right.

Oh ?
Please elaborate.
My sister does not have WLM, only WM. But her laptop comes with built-in
webcam. So, what should I do and what does she have to do ? She is using
Vista Home premium, WM.

In the main messenger window - where you sign in:

To the right of the search window you will find an icon that allows you to
activate the menu bar. In the menu bar go to tools | audio and video setup.
Start the process. Have your sister do the same, after she downloads the
latest version of Windows Live Messenger.

When you are both online, double click on her name. The message window will
appear. Now click on the video button at the top to initiate the video call.

Simple really!

2 more questions, if you please.
1.) I have not asked my sister, since she has a built-in webcam, it is
highly possible that she has been using it. What if she is not using Windows
Live Messenger ?
2.) She does not have WLM and does not care to. Can she just install the
Messenger?
She is using Vista Home Premium, Windows Mail. Her e-mail provider is Yahoo.

For optimal performance both persons should be using the same program and
version - whatever program it may be.

The new Windows live Messenger has newer functions that the older version
does not. It is not intrusive at all. I would highly recommend that she
install it. The old one will still be on her computer should she wish to use
IT.

Just came back with a HP Deluxe Webcam version 2.0, with 8 MP still picture
resolution.
Plugged it in. System says " Your device is ready to use. "
I have not used the disc. provided by HP. Perhaps instructions needed to be
read, i.e. owner's manual.
Clicked Live Messenger's menu > Tools > Audio and Video set up. Tested the
settings > Finish.
Added my sister's address as contact.
Sent her an invitation, telling my webcam is installed.
What's next, or that's it ? Thank you.

If your sister has Windows Live Messenger she has to do the same as you did.

Then you double click on her name - after she is online, You then click on
the video button at the top of your messenger chat window. You will hear a
ringing sound. She will get an invitation. At this point she has to choose
either accept or reject.

If she accepts the call, you will both be able to see and hear each other.
Remember that much is dependent upon web speed and the call is susceptible
to the variances of the internet speed at the time.

I connect with a relative that uses a laptop. He can not do a video call
with me from his favorite easy chair but it works fine if he moves to the
dining room table. It's his wireless signal strength.

I have a problem ...
I double clicked my sister address ( she is not online ) > Chat window
appeared. Cannot find Video button.
I clicked menu at top right > found Video option, clicked it, and it said "
Get a webcam " ?????
