Susan, what do we call software that sometimes comes attached to cerial
boxes (eg. MS Age of Empires 1 and V-Rally2 come to mind as recent
examples)? The software is free but you have to pay for the cerial (and for
those who think the price is included in the cost of the cerial, sorry, the
price of the cerial is the same without it). Cerialware I guess a
better term would be Promoware as this reflects its true nature. This is
not to be confused with Demo-ware which is a separate type of ware used to
demostrate a softwares capability and is most likely to (always?) be limited
in some fashion.

Ahh, thanks Bjorn. I missed that one as the title doesn't really reflect
the nature of the ware. I prefer Promoware as it infers (at least to me)
that the product is a promotional item and that there maybe a special
requirement in obtaining it.

Very true, but I guess you could say the same of any freeware you get. The
"how you obtain it" always costs money (unless someone gives it to you on CD
or disk etc.). For example, if you want to get freeware via the internet
you still have to pay for another product to do so. In this case, the
internet connection itself (this is especially true if you are in a volume
plan like myself). Whilst others may be convinced that this is an apples
and oranges type of scenario, I don't believe it is.

Those who tend to impose seem to agree there indeed was a democratic
consensus. Those who impose less, differ. If a new consensus shows
more current visitors here favor a more relaxed atmosphere I don't see
how the old majority can rationalize an escape, even though others
don't give all that much thought to a democratic majority.

There is another view to it: IME 99% of the controlling/censoring posts come
from a minuscule group of people. Say less than 10 posters.

Which begs two derivations:
1) without those 10 people, the group's atmosphere would be a lot more pleasant.
Then just *Who* is the problem here?
(It is *my* considered opinion <g> that the 10-hood are. Not the impure ones)

2)from a psychological, help-thy-neighbour point of view, how are those 10
people different from the rest of us?

Well "it is *my* considered opinion" that their difference is some sort of
hypertrophy of the need to control and the tendency to publicly put down
others.
In the 10-some, this so desirable characteristic is also combined with a self-
serving tendency to distort reality and delude themselves: things like
believing and trying to make others believe that "the gang of 10" is "the
majority", or starting a sentence with "since this group is going to pot"
(then policing is obviously NEEDED, isn't it?) and so on.
Any dissenting views are just disregarded. Noticed that none of the censorship
advocates answered my <fmrhpvg8mve64adikshderhc6ct0ibheqm@4ax.com> higher in
this thread? That was cute.

Once those characteristics are noted, what words come to mind: control freak?
anal-retentive? fascistoid? crackpot? God-almighty-appointed-savior? YMMV.

YMMV. What comes to *my* mind is that this groups needs a self-appointed purity
militia a lot less than the self-appointed purity vigilantes need psychotherapy.



Point is, the censoring does NOT help. The netcops create more unpleasantness
than they cure. Period.

This is a good time for lurkers to express their views. One per
customer though please! <G>. Do you favor a strict interpretation? Or
a more relaxed one?

It was going on when I came here and I'd be surprised it it does not
continue after I'm gone. A risk of excessive noise to alleviate noise
on a long term basis seems to be a good risk.

Basically, what we need to "cure" is only less-than-10 problems.

I've never recommended adware or spyware (to the best of my
knowledge), yet there might be someone out there that chooses to use a
combination of these (...) That's not my call.
And I don't really think it is the group at large decision either. If
that is the problem offer up a solution or simply pass it up.

Absolutely. There is one specific application for which IME an adware/shareware
is heads and shoulders above the rest. When I decide to mention that, it is my
considered decision.
And I don't need --nor accept-- some fundie purity freak to try and censor me.

Maybe we could organize a collection to finance those less-than-10 therapies?

I don't think we need or will ever achieve a watertight situation. I think
it is rational to hope that we understand and respect the differences though.

Nonfreeware recommendations happen *anyway*. Let them remain the exception.

Personally, I believe the group is worth saving.

And just who appointed you (or anyone else) as the savior?

*Legitimizing* them is counterproductive, as it will greatly increase
their population, and once that gate is opened, there will be *no* way to
get the group focus back to *freeware*. We can hang on to what we have, and
what's proved useful, or we can just throw up our hands and give up.

What you again refuse to see is that the saviors' attempts at controlling the
"noise" actually produce much more noise than what they try to suppress.

And are worse at poisoning the group's atmosphere.

I post this is case the counting is still going on...

Some comments on my "votes", just to show my humble opinion in some matters,
especially on those I gave a "3".

- Betaware has a broad spectre, where some are fully functional programs.
Where it's not time-limited and outspoken to be freeware in the final
version, I consider it as on-topic as freeware itself. In cases where the
final status is uncertain, I think it still can be discussed, but with some
warning applied.

- There's a greyzone between Crippleware and Liteware, as the "severity of
limitations" are subjective opinions (IMHO my definition of Crippleware is
rather that features missing from the commercial program are still shown in
the ware, but not functional).

- There's variants of Trialware, where after the timelimit it's reduced to
Cripple- or Liteware. In those cases I think it could be discussed as such,
but with some caution.

- Demo-ware has a broad spectre ranging from Liteware to Trialware.

- The popups in Nagware can be more or less annoying, but on the other hand,
there actually exists commercial software with nag-screens as well.

- Orphanware/Abandonware also has a lot of variants. In those cases it's a
commercial software where the software company just has vanished, it's still
commercial software with those constraints applied. In some cases the
companies has abandonded the software and explicitly set it free (Visual
Thought), in other cases it was freeware to start with (Proxomitron).
Whether it's on- or off-topic should then be a consideration between it's
original status and the authors explicit expressions on actual status.

tables? Reason for asking - headers and rows does not align here,
fixed font or not...

Here's a repost with a second line of headers (that line up nicely in my
composition window but not in my newsreader). Let me know if these

you probably use spaces for tab...possible to use "hard" tab instead?
Or will that mess it up for everyone else here (I'm using Agent)?

Blush - I changed number of characters from 4 to 5 in Agents
message display settings (tab spacing) - and your table look fine.
(but isn't 4 or at least even numbers most often the default
setting in most readers? not sure...)

First line aligns correct with tab spacing set to 5 characters , when
I switch to 6 second line does.
