Your choice, according to budget, we can't really recommend one above the other, obviously the quad core's a better choice but it's just a question of cash.

at least 2048MB DDR2 Memory

Best you can afford, 800Mhz 6400 is a safe bet and I'd personally recommend Crucial; Corsair; OCZ, Kingston and Cellshock.

at least 500GB Serial ATA Hard Drive

I favour Samsung.

320MB nVIDIA 8800GTS Graphics

I've got the one made by BFG, it's a very good card.

A HD monitor at least 19'' widescreen

I'd personally recommend Samsung, BenQ & Philips.

An aluminium case

Take a look at the Lian Li Range. Also Thermaltake and Coolermaster range.

Have you considered a Power supply?

I've read bad things about Mesh and I need somebody who will deliver to Ireland.

Mesh/Schmesh

I wouldn't mind a short stay in Dublin or maybe Kilrush in Co. Clare I hear is nice ;)

Just had a look at the config you posted.

1) It's overpriced.
2) It doesn't give the make of the hard drive.
3) Hiper PSU's are more prone to failure than other, better, makes.
4) If you're going to opt for a media reader consider getting a combined floppy drive/media card reader instead. Only costs a little more.
5) The mouse chosen isn't very good for gaming.
6) You have a black DVDRW and a beige media reader.
7) For around another twelve quid it may be worth considering a seperate DVD drive to copy discs from.
8) Other than that - peachy :)

thanks floppy,

do you think i should just go ahead and shop around for the components and do a self build.

any store recommendations for
cpu, hardrive, case, motorboard, memory, monitor

might have to go to several to get the best overall price.

Yes.

See my sig. And I'll come back to this. Hopefully other members will chime in with sugestions as well.

The 320Mb version of the 8800GTS is actually quite a bargain at the moment (compared to the price it originally sold at around November 06) OCUK Link

might have to go to several to get the best overall price.

By the time you consider postage, that option may work out uneconomical. Unless you can find lots of special offers. It's usually best, where possible, to source from one supplier, at most two.

Just to chip in here, i bought my current system from cyberpower.
The only problem i came across was the price; cyberpower is fairly new, and in its early days it was very cheap.

But as floppy quite rightly said, it is a tad over-expensive at cyberpower now and its probably better to go to a different supplier and build yourself.

Have a look Here for components, or go with OCUK.

Good luck :thumb:

if your gonna build it, which is by far the best option for a top end system i'd use OCUK as well

looking at the spec you posted and with a lot of guessing i'd say you could prob build it for under £1000

excellent, all sounds good. Think I'll do a self build then.
Looking for a good monitor. I was looking at the 22'' Dells - looking for one with HD port - any recommendations?

ok this is what i'd get, you need to add an OS of your choice plus a mouse and keyboard

note this is with a Q6600 CPU, if you change it to the E6600 you could save £200

Edit: oops total price is £1191.34

Hmm, I think a 520W PSU will be right on the limit for that system.

My Tagan 480W wasn't enough for the first system in my sig.

Granted, I have an extra optical drive and two more hard drives, but all the same....

And I would definitely favour the OCZ memory over the Geil.

Just my POV :)

Fair enough, why not the GeIL RAM?

I quite like the look of that final spec V_R - and as regards the Geil RAM, its good stuff so no problems there :thumb:

Because in all the reviews I've read when comparing memory, Geil only performed above generic RAM.

It was poor at overclocking and was always beat by the likes of Crucial, Corsair, OCZ & Kingston, to name but a few.

If you're not going to overclock, then it's probably a good buy. It certainly is a superb price.

Those reviews I'm referring to, I must admit, were all about six months ago, when I was researching parts to build a new system.

It just stuck in my mind to avoid Geil memory, was all.

What I'd like to see is somebody prove me wrong and get a good overclock from a couple of sticks of Geil because as I said, the price is very tempting.

Well i've not seen any reviews on ram recently either, but there's guys on the ocuk forums running the GeIL at 900-1000mhz and higher, at 4-4-4-12. :)

The customer reviews of the ram are good too.
