this is along the lines of what you are attempting to do, edit the GPO.

Edit GPO http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc739902(WS.10).aspx ( this one tells you what you already know about editing, however it mentions GPO creater owners security group as yet another group in which your user should reside in order to edit.)
Note that it gives you domain admin group and enterprise admin group as those of which your profile must be a member in order to properly edit a GPO.
