VueScan 8.0 Beta 1 Available

I've thought about this a bit, and I've modified VueScan 8.0
to not watermark when:

Thanks Ed and appreciate your responses from all the posters and
potential customers. Having been in the business (computers) for
years and a programmer for part of that I can understand your need for
protecting a good product.
1) For transparent material, when the scan is less than the optical
resolution

When you say optical resolution I'm assuming you mean in the case of
the LS5000 ED less than 4000 dpi. This is still a higher resolution
than many scanners and more than most users would ever need.
2) For reflective material, when the scan is less than the minimum of
optical resolution and 300 dpi

On the flat bed I rarely scan at greater than 300. I'd likely be
unable to tell the difference scanning at slightly less.

I mentioned this as because "to my way of thinking" (which could be
flawed) the Beta would need to expire, or use some method of
preventing the user from continuing to use it after the full fledged
version is released as the resolutions listed are probably "good
enough" for many, if not most day-to-day users. For those of us who
use the higher resolutions it wouldn't, but I'm guessing we are
relatively few in number.

As I read one of your responses the app does not do batch processing
and I rarely run less than 4 or 5 images at a time. With slides it's
usually 36 to 50, or full roll batches.

My other potential use is the reading of RAW files from my D-70 which
has been back to the dealer since the flash broke.

Again, thank you for the prompt attention to my concerns.

I'm about to start working on fixing this.

Yes, I like hearing about any problems people find.

It was partly my mistake. I went back and did a manual calibration
from the drop down menu a few times and eventually did it with the
front door closed on the scanner. It just didn't give me the pop up
message to close the door before calibration.

BTW, setting multiple "number of samples" seems to be working with the
dual IV now.

Thanks for the response.

I just released VueScan 8.0 Beta 1. ...

Now up to beta3 apparently -- but the one I just downloaded dies
immediately upon launching:

dyld: /[path].../VueScan.app/Contents/MacOS/VueScan can't open
library: /usr/lib/libiconv.2.dylib (No such file or directory,
errno = 2)

Perhaps this library only exists in Panthwire? [inside joke --
Panther]

No, not yet.

Will it be very soon, or is there a technical problem that will postpone
this functionality ?

I'm actually comparing the capabilities of the Coolscan V and 5000 ED, and
the one-pass multisampling is the feature that will make me buy the 5000.

But only if Vuescan supports it.
I didn't hear anywhere if Nikon Scan works on Linux.

I tried Beta 2 with my DSE 5400. No problems (although IR cleaning still
affects clean areas in the scan, as the previous versions did), but I
have one minor issue with the UI. At 1152x870 display resolution, I have
to scroll to go through the advanced settings in the lef-hand part of
the main window. This wasn't necessary with previous versions, and I
think you might consider to reduce vertical spacing between the settings
items, or perhaps use a smaller font size.

I tried beta 3. If I by mistake try to open Vuescan twice computer will hang.

Now I'm impressed.
I downloaded beta 3, installed it and it gives excellent images and
color.

When you say multisampling, do you mean "batch" or the ability to
preview and scan.

I don't think it will do batch scans yet, but I've spent all of 15
minutes with it and do like it. When it'll do batch scans I think
I'll be sending in my money.

It does the preview and image and saved them in the directory I
selected.

I'm so used to NikonScan it's going to take a bit of getting used to,
but as I said, I do like it.

When you say multisampling, do you mean "batch" or the ability to
preview and scan.

Multi-sampling in this context means taking multiple samples from the same
film position per pixel. That will reduce (scanner and photon) noise and
thus improve the Signal-to-Noise ratio. In practice the improvement is the
most visible in less noisy dark film areas, but the entire image benefits.

Some scanners achieve this by doing multiple passes over the film and then
combine the full image scans, others halt the CCD at each scan position
while taking multiple readings (and average them) before moving on. The
first approach may suffer from poor registration between scans.
