Vista's prices (Europe vs USA)

When I convert the avg. German retail price before tax (~ 419 Euros) to
Dollar, I get a retail price of USD $546 or CAD $643 (before tax). Compare
that to USD 380 in the States. It's a joke.

Why Windows Vista (Ultimate for example) costs in USA $399.00 (=
€306.50) and in Europe €599.00.
Are we European so rich?

buy Windows Vista Home Premium that is very good.

Who knows why the price is so high over there. Maybe it is because of EU going after MS and all those fines that they are imposing.

Very doubtful when you consider that the OEM versions are about the same
price. It's more likely that the retailers are taking advantage of their
customers. If you can prove your statement, do so. Otherwise, you're
just making it up as you go along.

The retailers are selling at cost plus an agreed percentage. I spoke at
length yesterday with my own supplier who told me that the markup on
Vista retail was pretty low (which is why most of the UK suppliers are
coming-in at around the same price). Microsoft control the trade
selling price to the UK distributors, and the larger margins go
straight back to Microsoft.

Now, that's the kind of proof I was talking about. Oh well, in Europe we
will have to buy generic OEM versions (not that I would buy anything else).

"There is a solution. It´s cost effective, safe and most importantly, it´s
legal. Windows XP OEM is usually shipped only with a new PC, but in a drive
to make computing safer for everyone, Microsoft have now declared that it
can be sold with just about any hardware purchase. Even a cheap mouse such
as the one this link points to!"

I am sure this is not legal.

In Italy is illegal to sell SO's OEM versions without hardware...

I don't know about the EU, but in the US the System Builder (OEM) agreement
was changed, last year to not require a hardware purchase to sell an OEM
version of Windows. Just like the OEM versions of most hardware components
can be bought, without any restrictions, at most online or retail stores.

The license agreement still requires that the OEM version be installed on
new hardware. It simply takes the new hardware determination out of the
hands of companies like NewEgg and puts it in the hands of the installer.

are you kidding?

so paying that much for an OS that i cant use if my motherboard breaks and i
have to buy a new one is reasonable?

get real.

this is microsofts doing. in the US you can buy vista online and download
it. i tried this but they refuse flat out if you are not in the US - however
they allowed me to download the beta versions? hmm. no, they decide to
charge more for it in europe than in america.

there is no way i am paying more for vista than others. for now, i give up.
i will stick to XP and the vista trial i have. if the pricing structure is
the same when SP1 for vista comes out then i guess my student friends will be
useful then

I'm not advocating Vista here at all, mate. Yet the price for OEM is
reasonable, compared to what you get. What do you get? An expensive attempt
to combine the style, security and usability of MacOS X with the
performance, gaming abilities and compatibility of XP Pro.

Bottom line: There is no perfect choice. Personally, I will continue to use
XP Pro on my production systems for at least a year. Vista OEM will be
installed and get serviced until it qualifies for serious use.
