Why Windows Vista (Ultimate for example) costs in USA $399.00 (=
€306.50) and in Europe €599.00.
Are we European so rich?

Don't know where you're shopping, but in Finland you can get the english
or finnish retail Ultimate for 480 euros, and OEM versions for 180
euros, 32 and 64 bit.

On german computer store websites, the OEM can be bought for 158 euros,
and retail is about 460 euros in german or english.

But I agree, 150-170 euros is a huge price difference.

Sono italiano ;-).
But why an Italian seller should buy Vista in English or Finnish?
599€ is too much, for any so...

The System Builder version of Vista Ultimate Full (32/64 Bit) is 169,00 Euro
plus shipping in Germany. Thats what I will get.

Hi Guys/Gals

I agree the prices in Europe are somewhat over the top
even allowing for tax/VAT etc.
Even by Aussie standards with our GST of 10%, the EU
prices are unworkable for a lot of customers.

One thing we should be asking is; 'What is the wholesale
price for Vista, before the resellers or the Govt get their
fingers in the pie ? And we also have to remember that
the exchange rates are determined by just a handful of
the most powerful banks on the planet !
Hey Deutschland, even your price is unreasonable !

Hmmmmm, thinking out loud !

MS needs to recoup it's losses from all those fines the EU keeps
imposing.

If that were true -- it isn't and you can't back it up -- generic OEM
versions wouldn't be the same price in the EU as the USA. I suspect that
the retailers are just taking their customers for a ride and MS has
nothing to do with it.

I don't think 189 Euros for the Full (System builder) verison of Ulitmate is
unreasonable.

Excuse me, what is System Builder?
And where have you seen 169€ (in dutch language???) ?

Lancer

I think he means OEM.

SystemBuilder is what was formerly referred to as OEM version. The DVD is
identical to the full version, but you don't get support directly from MSFT.

169,00 is the price at my online shop for the German language version.
English (UK) is available for 189,00. You should be able to get Dutch for
about the same price.

A generic Utimate in Spain costs 158,92 eur.

I can get it for 158.92 EUR. It still begs the question as to why there
is such a difference between Retail prices.

Yes. I was just giving the OP a hint to get a system builder version
instead. IMHO, the high retail price for Vista in Europe pays for the huge
marketing, development and manufacturing cost M$ paid for Vista. European
customers now pay for the (comparably) lower prices in the US. I think over
time, when Vista sales in the US meet M$' expectations, they will adjust the
retail price in Europe.

Just my 2 cent...

We in the UK have some website selling OEM version for just over £100.

They say on the website :

"There is a solution. It´s cost effective, safe and most importantly, it´s
legal. Windows XP OEM is usually shipped only with a new PC, but in a drive
to make computing safer for everyone, Microsoft have now declared that it
can be sold with just about any hardware purchase. Even a cheap mouse such
as the one this link points to!"

I am sure this is not legal.

What's not legal, the on line store or selling generic OEM versions of
Windows?

Vista Ultimate Retail is $499 in Canada without provincial and Federal taxes
included.. prices shown in North America always look better than Europe
because they never include either tax.. also, state and provincial tax rates
vary.. we are not all getting the deal that Europeans tend to think we are..

Perfectly legal. You do not need to buy hardware to be able to buy OEM
Windows.

See

ess_Software/>

Watch for the wrap if your newsreader truncates long lines.

I buy most of my OEM software there and have never had to buy hardware
with it.

Ah, I was always under the impression that you had to buy hardware.

That makes a little cheaper for some.
