This is mis-information. Microsoft has a 45 day no questions asked refund
policy. It doesn't matter if the box was opened and the software was
installed or not.
Microsoft North American Retail Product Refund Guidelines:
http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/productrefund/refund.asp
Well, I for one am certainly going to find out.
I already returned BOTH my copies as per the instructions on this page.
However, this Product Returns webpage only IMPLIES a 45-day "no questions
asked" policy
"...All software and hardware products that you purchased in the United
States or Canada (North America) come with a Microsoft 45-Day Money-Back
Guarantee. Microsoft will refund your purchase price subject to policy
guidelines and warranty and license agreement provisions...."
There it is.... the gotcha.
"...subject to policy guidelines and warranty and license agreement
provisions..."
Translation: "the Return Policy is actually defined in the EULA, and not on
this web page."
See how Microsoft works? read on.
Case in point - getting people to buy this to begin with.
"Do your homework" they say - make sure your system is compatible - use the
HCL and the UA (Upgrade Advisor).
What they DON'T tell people is both these tools are seriously flawed.
In my case I have [4] separate pieces of mainstream hardware that the UA
said were "fine".
What the UA didn't say was that there are no drivers.
Microsoft says this is the vendors fault.
The vendors say it is Microsoft's fault.
Guess who gets stuck holding the bag?
The UA declares unsupported hardware as being "fine", since even if there
are no drivers, MS knew about it in advance, therefore it "works as
expected", which is MS double-speak for "it won't work"
Catching on yet? there's more...
Software? same shit --exactly--.
There's the "Certified for Windows Vista" List, then there's the "Works with
Windows Vista" List.
The first one pretty much states, rather "certifies" that it will work in
Vista, while the second
only IMPLIES that it MIGHT. See the difference?
Seeing a pattern yet?
Hats off to the boys in marketing.
