False. In Europe and countries other than the USA, Ubuntu has a much
larger share than 1%, more like 30%. Most people in the USA buy from
places that preinstall Windows and don't even know there are alternatives.
Fortunately, that's changing.

So if what you are saying is true, Windows will be around a long long time
and Ubuntu will still be at one percent in the USA which is fine by me. I
don't care how large the share grows in Europe. By the time the numbers
change for Microsoft, I will be long retired buying art and hanging it in
hospitals and banks!!!

You don't care about anyone but yourself, eh? Why am I not surprised?

I thought by now there would be a ton of horror stories on Vista SP2. It
looks like everyone had success.

Smart people are waiting a few months for MS to shake the bugs out.

Follow up:

I googled 0x80073712 and found some problems on my computer I hadn't noticed
before.

I started command prompt as administrator and ran sfc /scannow and it
encountered some problems that could not be fixed.

Install this update for Windows Mail to revise the definition files that are
used to detect e-mail messages that should be considered junk e-mail or that

I believe this is a symptom and not the source of the problem.

The System Update Readiness tool ran without a hitch.

Still can not install SP2. Not sure where to go from here.

My attempt to install Vista SP2 failed for unknown reasons.

It failed to install even under Safe Mode.

I even downloaded and installed Windows6.0-KB947821-v4-x86. No problems
were encountered, SP2 install still fails.

It has failed to install 4 times here.
Twice using Windows Update with AV off.
Once after installing KB947821 and using the standalone KB948465.
Once more with the AV completely removed.

Once more...and I wipe Vista off the HD.
Jeez...even linux actually installs the updates it offers.
Sweet and uneventful install here on two computers, both dual core (one AMD,
one Intel) and both with 2 GB RAM using Vista Home Premium. I just turned
off all the stuff in the system tray (except ESET Smart Security) cleaned up
with Window Washer, C:\Windows\System32\cleanmgr.exe, Chklnks.exe (Resource
Kit tool), Adaware and CCleaner, and then let Windows Update get on with it,
restarting the computers when it asked me to. Everything seems to be running
as it should. I hope all comes right for you quickly.

Actually, that is pretty much what I would have to do.

My sp2 downgrade fails with error code E-FAIL 0x80004005 because GRUB is my
boot manager. (from what little I have read on it)

I'll keep my Linux partitions...Microsoft can keep sp2.

I don't dual boot anymore. I have one machine with XP for gaming and the
rest are all running Ubuntu.
