Will RC1 be only an Update to Vista Beta2 and can be applied only to a
functioning validated install of Vista Beta2?
Any insight, info, speculation, skinny or gossip gratefully accepted.
Thanks, Art

RC1 will be a new build. Upgrading from Beta 2 to RC1 is not recommended.
RC1 should be clean install only.
Having a validated Beta 2 is not a prerequisite for installing RC1.

Most likely not an upgrade to Beta 2 is the rumour, since the conjecture is
that RC1 will be devoid of the debugging code so allegedly prevalent in Beta
2 and hence will be a clean install scenario or perhaps there will be an
upgrade path from XP. Speculation continues as to whether RC1 will be
widely available or only distributed to those who are currently enrolled in
the CPP. Gossipers whisper in dark corners regarding tentative release
dates in August, September, October. Those are the solid facts as I know
them.

According to a Microsoft Website: You Need to Have an Activated Beta 2 CPP
Copy in Order to Receive RC1, Just FYI.

Until we see the release notes for RC1 no one can say. If upgrades from
5384 are permitted they may still not be advisable.

Good debugging is always best on clean installations. There is a strong
possibility that a new Product Code will be issued for RC1 so hang onto that
email address you used.

I don't know what a 'validated' installation is. If you are referring to
'activated', then I don't know how you would start the upgrade process from
an unactivated (and presumably non-functional) copy of Vista. In that
scenario you might have to do a clean installation.

I would not worry too much about it either way since RC1, no matter how you
install it, will not be suitable for a primary home computer anyway.
Obviously you are not keeping any important files on a beta OS so I don't
see how it matters.

Are you encountering some problem that you think might prevent you from
doing a clean installation of Vista RC1? If so, now is the best time to
solve it.

It was either on the Get Ready Site, or in the email that they sent.
I can not find it now...

The GetReady page only says,
"The information on this page is intended for Customer Preview Program
participants. Participants will receive an e-mail message with additional
information when Windows Vista Release Candidate 1 (RC1) is available later
this year. Thank you for testing Windows Vista."

The pertinent part in the Monday, June 12th blog is:

Please let us underscore a very important point surrounding Windows Vista
Beta2 that can be easily overlooked in all the excitement to download and
install the code: it is very important that every user activate Windows
Vista Beta2 within the first 14 days of installation. Activation allows us
at Microsoft to test our support infrastructure as well as the activation
process itself. In addition, we'll be unable to provide you with a copy of
RC1 (Release Candidate 1, the release subsequent to Beta2) unless your copy
of Beta2 is activated.

Interesting. I wonder why nothing to that effect was mentioned on the
Windows Vista website for the CPP.

Thanks for the link, Dotcom :)

Zapper - there was nothing regarding this in the email from Microsoft, or on
the Get Ready site.

So those persons who legitimately registered for the CPP but did not
activate Beta 2 (for whatever reason) will not be included in the RC1
release? That's a PR nightmare waiting to happen!

That's what I was thinking!!!

I don't think it will turn out to be much of an issue either way. RC1
should bring with it new trial programs.

I received an appointment on Outlook's To-Do Bar two days ago that said "
Release of Microsoft Windows Vista "Release Candidate 1" Tue 8/15/2006
8:30am -9"00am
On the Internet check www.microsoft.com.
