Mike, I completely understand what you're saying.
From what I have read, WGA has not deactivated
any illegal KMS activated copies of Vista. It may at
some point be able to single out those that activated
against servers in China or elsewhere. But, to my knowledge,
Microsoft is rather stumped about what they can actually
do about those using the virtual KMS server.
WGA did mess up those "Frakenbuilds". But only if those
users downloaded the update. Which is actually the key
for the pirates- turn off updates. As with XP, there were
several ways for the thieves to obtain updates without going
through Microsoft.
See, I keep thinking it's really a numbers game. As I've said
and others in this group told me repeatedly- over 90% of XP's
sales came from OEM. I believe that percentage will be even
higher for Vista, simply because of the hardware requirements.
Why put so much focus on something that's such a small part
of your bottom line? Especially, since it has started to piss off
some paying customers. And, keeps adding to the complexity of the
OS code.
