Hi,

If there is a new thread started please let me know, because to date I have
still not been able to solve this problem.
I have tried everything that I can think (including a reinstall of XP) of
and everything that has been suggested without any effect on the problem.
I now transfer files on my home network by memory stick!!

Rich

Rich,

If there is a second thread (and I hope there will be), I hope we can all note
it. I would like the other poster to start one though. Having two threads
under one heading does NOT help us to help you. We need to focus on your
problem.

Back to your problem.

In one case, you write
I have got rid of one browstat error by increasing the stack size to "decimal
11" and later
I increased the IRP_STACK_SIZE on the Vista pc to correct browsat status
error 1130. I set it at 11 and this seems to have fixed that error. yet later
I have increased the IRPStackSize in steps up to dec.200 on both the Vista
(Margaret-PC machine) and the XP machine (RJC-Rutland) and it has made no
difference,

If you're increasing the IRPStackSize setting, note the absolute precision
required in both the Path (aka "Key"), and the Setting Name (aka "Value").

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ LanmanServer\
Parameters] (with spaces removed) is the key. You MUST use this exact key.

IRPStackSize is the value name. You must use this exact value name.

Robert & Chuck,

Thanks for the help again.

When I increased the stack size before I thought I had got rid of the error
mistakenly. I think that I hadn't realised that the problem went away if I
started the Vista PC first. (This is not normally a easy workaround because
my desktop runs most of the time and my wife's Vista notebook just visits)
I will have get back to you with the other tests in a week or two because my
wife works for the armed forces and her notebook is with her (without being
too specific on line) somewhere hot and sandy.

Just one other thought, one common thread on all pc's is that they have
Kaspersky Internet Security loaded on them. I have tried exiting it and
disabling it in msconfig and it makes no differance, but last week my boys pc
stopped being able to access the iTunes shop. I tried all the recommended
fixes and eventually fixed it by completely uninstalling Kaspersky then
reinstalling it. I will try the same on both the XP pc and the Vista pc when
I can get my hands on it.

Hi Rich,

Kaspersky, like other security programs, contains an anti-worm component that
acts like a firewall, and is known to interfere with SMBs, and cause problems.
Look for other threads in this forum that mention "Kaspersky" - there was one
just this week. Kaspersky Support isn't very helpful all of the time,
unfortunately.

And if you're going to bottom post (which is good, and I thank you), please
remove your empty signature from the top of the post. Specifically, a line
starting with "-- " is a problem with some news readers.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/how-to-post-on-usenet-and-encourage.html#TopPosting

If you continue to have problems with IRPStackSize, please re read the Microsoft
article, and double check the registry path ("key"), and the registry key name
("value name"). This particular registry entry is completely syntax sensitive.
One wrong character, you aren't adding / modifying the right entry, and you're
wasting your time.

Still the 2127, and that will definitely interfere with ability to see other
computers. The 1130 is on MARGARET-PC, and the 2127 on RJC-RUTLAND.

The 2127 is the problem then. The trouble is that I don't have any idea how
to fix it or what causes it. The stacks are at dec.50 on both machines so I
guess that it can't be that.

The published limit of 50 is for Windows 2000 / XP. I have no documentation for
Vista, but since Vista uses more resources overall, maybe it's higher. Use
Process Explorer, watch key metrics as it is right now, and get used to how
things look. Then increase the stacksize on the server still more, and see if
something breaks.

The error 53 says that you don't have registry (administrative) access to the
other computer. Is Toby using Guest access? Does Toby run XP Home?

The Toby computer is an std, single user administrator account (there are no
passwords on any of the accounts).
I have downloaded and installed Process Explorer but I'm not familiar with
this program although it looks like it could be informative.
I have increased the IRPStackSize in steps up to dec.200 on both the Vista

Help!!!
I am going to borrow a different make (D-Link) of router and see if that
makes a difference, I have already tried using the LAN connections thus
bypassing the wireless parts without effect.

Regards Rich
Not to rob the thread, but I have a very similar issue that Richard is
experiencing. I had a 2Wire router/modem a few weeks ago, and my XP machines
were visible from my Vista Laptop. The 2wire router went boom...so my ISP
provided provided me with a new Gigaset Router/modem and I can no longer see
my xp machines in the network browser. I also can not see any network shares
or use UNC for network shares on my XP machines from my Vista Laptop. What
I can do is access the network shares on the XP machines via direct IP.

Do I need to reset the XP share

You really should start a new thread.

If you can access by IP address, but not by host name (UNC), you have a SMB
problem. This will generally be related to the NetBT setting, or a personal
firewall.

Recent updates to Internet Explorer (yes, to IE) can cause problems to Windows

Hi again.

FIXED IT !!!!!!!

It was Kaspersky Internet Security. Even though I have tried exiting
Kaspersky and also tried to stop it loading using MSConfig it still blocked
the networking with a Vista Machine when the Vista machine was not master
browser. It only started working when I completely uninstalled it and loaded
Sophos instead.

I've binned Kaspersky now and I'll try Sophos instead.

Thanks for all your help.

Richard.
