Hi,

I have a new HP notebook, three other XP pc's and a Netgear wireless router.
I want to add the Vista pc to my home network.
I have worked through lots of posts about XP/Vista networking without a fix.
I have installed the link-layer topology responder on all the XP machines, I
have set all the work groups to MSHOME (inc. the Vista machine) I have
checked the restrictanonymouse reg entry and set to "0" on all machines. I
have ran the network wizard on all XP machines and set the Vista machine to
"Network Discovery = on", "File Sharing = on", "Public Folder Sharing = on".
I can see all PCs (inc. the Vista PC) from all the XP PCs and transfer files
ok, but the Vista PC shows non of the other XP PCs in the network folder and
if I go to the Network Sharing Centre and click "View full map" I can see all
the XP PCs correctly. I have had the rest of the network shown correctly on
the Vista PC a couple of times but only intermittently.
I am running the windows firewall on all PCs with no other firewall
installed and Kaspersky AV. I can ping all PCs from all PCs ok. I have tried
disabling all firewalls and AV but the problem is the same.
Anyone any ideas please!!!!!!!!!

Richard,

I had what largely sounds like the same problem. See the thread "Losing XP
file access on LAN" on 8/27 this discussion group. Turned out to be my master
browser settings. Chuck[MVP] has a phenominal amount of info at his site and
is a wonderful help, links referenced in the previously mentioned thread.

Hope, this can help.

Cheers!

Hi, you are right I do have a master browser problem. The XP pc starts
quicker that the Vista PC and because I always start them at about the same
time I always get the same problem. After reading you reply I started the
Vista machine the started the XP machine once the Vista machine had completed
it's bootup.
Voila the vista machine showed the other XP machine correctly.
Now I need to find our what to do about it.

All I can suggest is reading the extensive info on PChuck's site
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/04/nt-browser-or-why-cant-i-always-see.html#Prevent

or searching through this or the Vista discussion groups for master browser
info. I think you will end up having to choose a primary pc for it, with
backups / secondaries as desired. This seemed to be handled well in XP and
before, but I imagine now needs to be configured due to Vista.

There's a lot of information on Chuck[MVP]'s site. Written really well.

That is a shame because my children like to swap files when I'm not at home
so there is no one PC that is always on. I thought that is why MS invented
simple file sharing.
If Vista can't handle simple file sharing then in my opinion it is not fit
for purpose and MS have released a flawed operating system.

If that is the bottom line and there is no way to fix this or work around
then I will need to write a letter of complaint to MS and ask them to provide
me with a free copy of XP.

So if anyone out there knows a way to fix this problem please let me know.

Rich,

Simple File Sharing (in Windows XP) and Password Protected Sharing Disabled (in
Windows Vista) are authentication settings. Neither relate to browser ability.

The browser is a peer-peer resource directory. It works well when all computers
play by the same rules, not so well when they don't. Do you have one computer
that's always on?

Hi,
Thanks for you interest in my problem. Unfortunately I do not have one
particular PC that is always on, it depends on who is at home. I have noticed
by using the "browstat" prog that the vista pc can see the XT machines (apart
from on the network map) when it is the master browser. so the only work
around that I can think of is to shut down the whole system and re-start with
the Vista pc, which is inconvenient to say the least.
I was just reading some of your blogs about networking when this post
appeared. I'm trying to get my head round the concepts still.

I have got rid of one browstat error by increasing the stack size to "decimal
11" and I have tried turning off the DHCP Broardcast flag, but the problem
still persists.
I still get a browstat error "Unable to retrieve server list from
RJC-RUTLAND: 2127"
RJC-Rutland is the XP computer and it is the master browser (when the vista
pc is the master browser there are no problems).

Rich,

A 2127 error is rather obscure. Do "net helpmsg 2127" from a command window.

C:\>net helpmsg 2127

A remote API error occurred.

EXPLANATION

This message should occur only on a down-level computer. Any action to correct
the problem should be performed on that computer. The program or command you
were running on a server could not be completed. There may be communication
problems on the network, or the remote server may be short of resources.

ACTION

Contact your network administrator. Your administrator should make sure that the
server is configured with enough resources. Specifically, the NUMBIGBUF entry in
the server's configuration file may need to be increased.

What "stack size" did you increase to 11? We know of one setting, that you are
typically advised to start at 18, and work upwards.

My email is AT DOT

I increased the IRP_STACK_SIZE on the Vista pc to correct browsat status
error 1130. I set it at 11 and this seems to have fixed that error.
The only other errors I get are on the Vista pc when it is master browser.
They are browstat status error code "Unable to retrieve server list from
RJC-Rutland: 2127".
I also get the "Could not open key in registry, error 5" and "Unable to
determine build of browser master: 5" also but I understand that they are
normal if not executing browstat on the master browser pc.
It is a long time since I used MS-Dos but there was a pipe comand to
redirect output from the screen, could I use somthing like this to paste the
browstat response to this forum? That might help me explain my problem.
If I could somehow make the Vista pc automatically demand to become master
browser when it joined the network I think that would solve the problem. Is
this possible ?

Rich.

Ok I've re-discovered the ms-dos pipe comand so here goes for more info:
I've also increased the stack size to get rid of error 1130 to dec.50 of the
main XP machine and the Vista PC but its still there.
Here are the "ipconfig /all" and the "browstat status" results from the
Vista pc when all is well and it was started first:

What browstat errors are you seeing, anyway? Don't make us guess.

The published limit of 50 is for Windows 2000 / XP. I have no documentation for
Vista, but since Vista uses more resources overall, maybe it's higher. Use
Process Explorer, watch key metrics as it is right now, and get used to how
things look. Then increase it still more, and see if something breaks.

Still the 2127, and that will definitely interfere with ability to see other
computers. The 1130 is on MARGARET-PC, and the 2127 on RJC-RUTLAND.

So the 2127 error still occurs on another PC that has a new install of XP. I
guess there is a default setting that needs changing somewhere. (The Toby PC
still has windows firewall and kaspersky AV, but is makes no difference if I
exit the AV prog).
Do you think that it could be related to the Netgear wireless router? It is
quite new (6 months) Model DG834PN and I upgraded the firmware to the latest
about three weeks ago. I don't know if this information helps but it does
show that the problem is not restricted to just one pc.

The Toby computer is an std, single user administrator account (there are no
passwords on any of the accounts).
I have downloaded and installed Process Explorer but I'm not familiar with
this program although it looks like it could be informative.
I have increased the IRPStackSize in steps up to dec.200 on both the Vista
(Margaret-PC machine) and the XP machine (RJC-Rutland) and it has made no
difference, so I'm back at the same brick wall...................please
Help!!!
I am going to borrow a different make (D-Link) of router and see if that
makes a difference, I have already tried using the LAN connections thus
bypassing the wireless parts without effect.

Not to rob the thread, but I have a very similar issue that Richard is
experiencing. I had a 2Wire router/modem a few weeks ago, and my XP machines
were visible from my Vista Laptop. The 2wire router went boom...so my ISP
provided provided me with a new Gigaset Router/modem and I can no longer see
my xp machines in the network browser. I also can not see any network shares
or use UNC for network shares on my XP machines from my Vista Laptop. What
I can do is access the network shares on the XP machines via direct IP.

Do I need to reset the XP share

Still the 2127, and that will definitely interfere with ability to see other
computers. The 1130 is on MARGARET-PC, and the 2127 on RJC-RUTLAND.
The 2127 is the problem then. The trouble is that I don't have any idea how
to fix it or what causes it. The stacks are at dec.50 on both machines so I
guess that it can't be that.

The published limit of 50 is for Windows 2000 / XP. I have no documentation for
Vista, but since Vista uses more resources overall, maybe it's higher. Use
Process Explorer, watch key metrics as it is right now, and get used to how
things look. Then increase the stacksize on the server still more, and see if
something breaks.

The error 53 says that you don't have registry (administrative) access to the
other computer. Is Toby using Guest access? Does Toby run XP Home?

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
My email is AT DOT
actual address pchuck mvps org.

You really should start a new thread.

If you can access by IP address, but not by host name (UNC), you have a SMB
problem. This will generally be related to the NetBT setting, or a personal
firewall.

Recent updates to Internet Explorer (yes, to IE) can cause problems to Windows

Hi,

If there is a new thread started please let me know, because to date I have
still not been able to solve this problem.
I have tried everything that I can think (including a reinstall of XP) of
and everything that has been suggested without any effect on the problem.
I now transfer files on my home network by memory stick!!
