To test if a system is stable, you need the latest drivers for everything,

some 'latest drivers' are the worst ones, betas and such. I am still running
the original drivers(from the 'pressed' CD)
on an ATI 9600 AIW. There are times when you want them(latest and greatest),
but a just installed OS, thats running correctly, hardly needs tampering
with until your satisfied its stable. If hardware hangs at install there
isn't squat you can do about it anyway.
If you jump right in and muck about you'll never know what it was that
turned your rig on its ear.
Or that should read, a lot worse than XP

All this assumption about whats going to happen is futile. Just spreads
rumour and BS. 95 started out pretty lax, and look what happened. If it were
my software and company, I'd break your legs for stealing my stuff, consider
yourself lucky it's Bill your dealing with.

So you're saying anybody who knows how to hack windows should and

You're playing semantics, as usual.

In my opinion, everyone should be free to use software without
having to jump through hoops just because some greedy software
publisher wants to burden its captive users.

Most just buy a new system with the current OS preinstalled.

And then there's the real world where MS knows damned well
that with no activation at all, few would bother to pay for their OS.

Irrelevant to that claim you made about how many buy an upgrade CD.

it's very easy to work around
Microsoft's monopoly era schemes.

How do you work around having Microsoft completely scan your
computer before letting you download an update ?

Love their privacy statements ;)

They won't come in your mouth.

I count on non-Microsoft technical experts and hackers to figure out
and publish when Microsoft is doing something illegal, and I hope
the system will protect me/us from frivolous legal action.

Communications experts know what information Microsoft is gathering.
