Perhaps you should reconsider your urge to buy. I'm frequently hearing the
gurus advise people to wait for Service Pack 1 (for a hint as to why, lurk
in this newsgroup for some of the problems).
I was under the impression that the install had to be run from a
installed copy of XP or use the double install work around mentioned
here many times. Were you entering the product ID when you installed?
Try loading it first as a trial then go back and reload it and put in
your product key.
