Vista a dog, or what ????

My XP died and I just bought a Vista machine, thus far about 50% of my
old programs won't run, including

Matlab 5.3
CoolEdit
Cakewalk Express
Humungous games

I'm a heavy user of the 1st three progs, and Humungous made the best
kid games and I've got a new kid. OK, it's old stuff, but I've gone
thru WIndows 95, 98, 2000, and xp, with no problems, and now
everything won't work ....

Plus the computer has a RealTek audio gadget that undoes the
flexibility of the old system.

I'm gonna take the thing back and pay a 60.00 restock fee, and try to
revive my XP machine.

To me it looks like MS shot the pooch with Vista, what is the
consensus ?

As DP suggested, many like it and many hate it with many more
somewhere in between.

Have you checked with the program manufacturers about Windows Vista
compatibility?
Did you try Compatibility Mode?
Ask other users of those programs to see if they have a solution.

If you decide to return it, some OEMs and most local shops will sell
computers with any operating system you choose, including Windows XP
through January 2008.

Lano DeMentar

you will have to get updated versions of those programs or other ones that
are similar...

or install XP and dual boot your pc

they changed the sound structure too much in vista, and that is making many
people who create or edit music very mad.

They stick with windowsXP for now....

And just what is the configuration of this particular machine? That is,
was this Vista machine built specifically with these 3 applications in
mind or was it just an off-the-shelf OEM purchase? I would have done
some serious research if I were going to be using Matlab, CoolEdit and
Cakewalk Express. AFAIK, the overhead of using older Windows apps such
as CoolEdit does increase with more complex OS's, as I have found when
using it with Win98SE, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. OTOH,
my machine designs do compensate for such changes over the years.

Also keep in mind that people on this NG are here mostly to seek solutions
to problems. So you might find a slightly more negative tilt here than you
do in the entire universe of Vista users.
I like it and have had few problems if any. But I don't deny that other
folks have had problems.

There is no real consensus.
Somwe like it, some hate it, some don't know enough to be sure.
I think MS missed the pooch, and their foot & shot themselves directly in
the head.
If Vista had actually been an improvement, I would have bought 250 new
machines for our network.
But I dislike it enough that I put off upgrading many systems and converted
several older W98/ME/NT/W2K systems to Linux.
I don't think MS has gotten the message about just how many of us dislike it
enough to avoid it.... or they are arrogant enough to think 'they'll come
around in time'.

In what way is Vista not an improvement for you? In many ways it is but
it does come with a steep learning curve.

Are your users savvy enough to use Linux? Our users are such a bunch of
dim-wits who would run a mile if they saw Linux. Hand-holding all they
way with our bunch. Poor helpdesk :(

We've put just under 900 Vista boxes out so far with no problems at all
but I do feel sorry for our training department.

Some program just will not work in Vista, same as some old programs would
not work in XP and the same for 95 before that.

1% loss is not big deal, so many people try Linux and move right back to
windows. You your choice and let other make thiers.

Most Vista users don't know about this group.

FWIW, I have MatLab 7.0.1 running on Vista - it runs fine (in fact it's
32-bit MatLab on 64-bit Vista - still runs fine).

What specific problem are you seeing with MatLab 5.3? There may be an easy
workaround (although, unsupported by MathWorks).

MatLab 5.3 is getting pretty old ... what compiler are you using, to compile
your MEX files? If you want to use Visual Studio 2003 or 2005, I think you'd
need MatLab 7x anyway. But I know it's pretty expensive to upgrade MatLab.

I can't comment about your other apps, I am not familiar with them.

computers don't break. Parts in it do. Why on the moon would you buy a
new PC just because one part in it is messed up?

[...]what is the consensus ?

Like almost everything in the world, no consensus :)

If I were you, I'd make sure (by asking experts here and/or check with
vendors) important software (then hardware) will work without problems or
can be upgraded (paid or free) before moving to next important question
(usability and/or others).

Whether it's Vista or other OSes, a computer with OS only can't help you
much, right?

Hope this helps and good luck.

Mr. Arnold

My God, I see you're full of more of the worthless dime a dozen on your
opinions. Well, at least someone dropped the dime and asked for the
worthless dozen this time. :)

It looks like you didn't do any research.

Next time check that a new computer can run
the software you want before buying it.

DELL still sells new machines with xp - also have several models
pre-loaded with Ubuntu Linux.
