hello all-I need some input on the best virus protection.

Always wrap up warmly this time of year and avoid people who are sneezing
and snuffling.

Oh, do you? Do you have a question? Do you even have an XP question....?

Oh, go on then: paid - NOD32, free - Avast or Avira, both taken with good
internet use habits.

Brief answer to an even briefer post.

Probably about the best *free* AV software is Avast...

truth is that it's better than a number of the paid ones

In my view, the best anti-virus program is NOD32.

If you want a free anti-virus program, I think the best is Avast. It's
not quite as good as NOD32, but is still excellent.

Free Avast and free Avira are two good choices for free products.
Free Avast also works on Win98Se. Both work in XP and Vista and Win2000Pro.
I have a dual boot Win98SE-Win2000Pro and I use free Avast in Win98SE and
free Avira in Win2000Pro.
I like the interface and features of Avira slightly better.

NOD32 is very good too.

Many will continue to say that without ever re-checking to find out if
they're right, too.

Why waste your time rechecking when you know for a fact it is the most
troublesome software?

My understanding is that the Current version is nothing like the
previous versions that were terrible resource hogs. I've not personally
tried/installed the latest version, but I've talked with many people
that believe it is a much better product than the prior versions.

I haven't tried it either. But I can say that the previous versions had a
tremendous potential for improvement.

I would agree that is certainly has been slimmed right down and does
not hog the resources it used. Certainly feels a lot snappier than it
used to. How effective it is against viruses though I cannot say.

Have you done any research on the latest version, or are you just
opinionating on your previous experiences, which are probably outdated
and,therefore, inaccurate?
