Laptop w/Windows xp home has about 6 infections = Virtumonde.

I think I might still be able to get into the BIOS.

Now what can I do to save my laptop? System Disk won't do a thing.

Still get "Missing Operating System".

Is there a way that I cld coppy a virus remover on to a disk and use that
first?

Wld that clear out the infections?

Then try my System Disk again?

DESPERATE.... THANKS..

Cathy

I think you are missing the point. I don't care what type of malware you
have on your OS. The BIOS should function OK (in some rare circumstances
viruses can infect the BIOS). The question is will the Operating System boot
up? I think you are saying no. If so, all the virus cleaners in the world
can't help you. You have to fix the partition on your disk containing the OS
and probably the boot loader. To do that you need an Windows XP
installation CD and you need to use the recovery console and tools like
fixmbr and fixboot. You can read about it on the Internet. Once you have an
Operating System that loads and runs, then you can worry about removing any
viruses and/or spyware.

Mr. Cat........ My laptop will not read my System Disk.

HDD is good a/c I did a self-test and it passed.

If all I get is a black screen w/msg "Missing Operating System", where do I
begin?

Thank for your valuable help.

Cathy,

I'm sure I will not be able to help you but if you answer these questions it
might make it easier for someone else to help you.

1. Laptop w/Windows xp home has about 6 infections = Virtumonde.
Why do you think it's Virtumonde? Did you see something that gave you that
idea while the system was still bootable?

2. HDD is good a/c I did a self-test and it passed.
Exactly what does this mean? How did you do a selftest?

3. My laptop will not read my System Disk.
Is your system bios set to boot from the CD/DVD rom drive?

If you cannot boot from the CD/DVD drive this is going to be very difficult.

Thanks for caring,Tim.......

1.) Yes, it might have been a free scan (but buy to fix it) from Spy
Dooctor or Trend Micro that listed the names of the infections.... 6
Virtuemonde.

2.) In the Bios..mmm.. under TOOLS (?) one has the oportunity to do a quick
or LONG test (75min) to chk to mak sure the HDD is good.

3.) My System BIOS IS set to boot from the CD/DVD drive. Yes.

ARGH!!!!! I'm getting ready to install a new CD/DVD drive and hope System
Disk can be read.

Anybody have any other suggestions????

I thank Mr Clark for asking those questions.
"cd", it would clarify things to use the terminology XP CD (instead of
disk); use of HDD for the system drive is Ok. I assume you changed the boot
order in the BIOS to read from the CD drive and the XP CD was in the drive
and that's when you got No Operating System found?
What happens when you just try to boot up form the HDD?

Cathy,

More questions?

4. Why were you doing a scan, were you having problems?

5. How long after the scan detected the infection before the machine stopped
working? Next reboot? A day? A week?

6. Do you have a floppy drive? Is there a disk in it? If so, remove and
try a full shutdown and restart.

7. If the system will not boot from the harddrive or the CDROM drive I think
it is unlikely that there is a problem with the CDROM. Have you Ever booted
from the CDROM drive before?

I get some lines of stuff....Phoenix, etc. then goes to "Missing Op SYS".

I did dhng the boot order to XP CD. No chng.

Was having prblms... more and more things wld dhng each day. I was running
WLOC and thought it wld catch all. This virus ATE WLOC.

I scan almost daily...... my HP laptop finally quite after about a week. No
floppy.

Sure, I've booted from my XP CD drive b/4.

I'm just in BIG trouble.

Tnx....

Remove the floppy, HDD and everything else from the boot order in the Bios
except for the CD drive. The way you do this is to list the same CD drive
for each entry. Make sure that you are exiting the BIOS and "saving" the
change. Try booting up with nothing in the CD drive and then with the XP CD
in the CD drive. BTW, where did you get the XP CD? Did it come with the
computer or from a friend? I am not being snoopy because of copyright
violation. You can use anybody's CD to repair the system. However, I would
like to know if it has ever been used. A lot of people build these things
and never try them out. I use an old Norton Ghost CD, and I also created
with an ISO burning utility a memtest and recovery console CD. Before
replacing your CD drive, you could burn a CD (in the ISO format) with a
loader on it. Also, Tim Clark is very good and answering his questions would
assist in resolving your problem.

Yes, I chngd boot order to XP CD first.

Just tried boot from hard drive and get some info stuff..Phoenix>> and then
it just goes back to "Missing Op SYS".

cd

It's starting to sound like a hardware problem (maybe controller issue). If
the CD drive and HDD are on the same channel I could easily believe it.
However, if the HDD is on the primary channel and the CD is on the secondary
channel, I'm not so sure. I would use someone elses computer and try to
boot up with your XP CD. If that works and your computer is still under
warranty, I would give the vendor a call.

Willl try these things, Mr. Cat. This is a refubished HP from "ECOST.com".

All XP CDs came with the machine.... just like new.

Haven't been involved w/ISO burning since I previewed xp. I will need Tim's
help to do what you are suggesting .

I love Microsoft.

Tnx..

Oh dear..... ya know, Tim.... I think this might have been the first time
that I booted from this particular XP CD drive. I have w/other machines,
but I think this may have been my first try.

Wonder if I cld try my Husband's disk even though he has a different HP
laptop model than mine????????

cd

Sorry... I don't know how to chng the boot orders to all CD. I tried, but
cld not chng them all to show same thing. HLEP!!!

cd

Cathy,

As long as it's a Windows XP install disk it should be okay to give it a try.
By the way, let's be clear that we are taking about a WindowsXP install
disk, not some other driver or software recovery disk that the manufacturer
might have provided to customize the system with drivers or added software.

Since you obviously are using a computer now, can you trying using your
WindowsXP install disk to boot from the computer you are on now. If it does
not work that it is the wrong disk or there is something wrong with it.

If that does not work try your husband's disk, remember, it is the WindowsXP
installation disk.

As far as your mentioning earlier in the thread about using my help to burn
an "iso", I would not be of much help with that.

You should be able to use anyones CD for the test. If you were to go ahead
and install XP, that's a different story. Some CD's are customized with
device drivers for that particular machine. And you also have to use the CD
Key for your computer.

Hi,

Do you have a Floppy drive on the LapTop?

You don't mention what Operating System you have installed on the LapTop, so
the following assumes you have Windows XP Home SP2 installed.

If so, you can download the following file from Microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...68-6e4f-471c-b455-bd5afee126d8&DisplayLang=en

This file will create a 6 disk Floppy set that can be used to boot the
Windows XP Home SP2 machine to the Recovery Console.

Note: If you have Windows XP Pro SP2 then you would use the following file
to create the boot disk set:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8D-5E10-49B5-B80C-0A0205368124&displaylang=en

Good luck,

Donald Anadell

Thanks so much, Donald....

I do not have floppy drive.

I am running XP home SP2.

Do you have a download for the XP CD drive that will put me back in business?
