I use the LiteStep shell:

http://litestep.net (registration required but takes just a few minutes)

IT can also do lots of other things, just pick a theme for it.

Indeed, I also recommend this installer for litestep; IMO, an
excellent way to install litestep for those what are new to
the shell:

Yep, long live Vern... It's the only one I found that sets the focus
properly when you change desktops.. It's great..

It appears that Vern is shareware and thus is not freeware.

The bb4win family of shells (bb4win, bblean [best],xbolite) has a virtual
desktop manager plugin. More accessible than litestep and easier to get up
and running. But if you haven't used an alternate shell, there'll be a
learning curve. Well worth it, though, IMO.

I have not liked bb4win too much. I like a taskbar that
1. does not overlap windows
2. is always visible

And for me, I had to do some changes to 'blackbox.rc' to set path names (my
Windows is in Portuguese).

+1 for LiteStep.

I use it with the RabidVWM module, which provides me the virtual
desktops with all the features I need.

Besides, if you can't find a theme that fits your taste, it's not
too difficult to make your own theme.

Maybe it's been awhile since you tried it? You can certainly have 1 and 2
nowadays. Check out the desktops at

It's up to you as to what plugins you want to install and configure.
