Using FireFox now, tabs still doesn't work perfectly

R

R. L.

Just switched to FireFox completely; Not without a lot of
sweat as it did not set itself as default browser properly
:-( (shortcut links got opened with error messges)
I had to dig into the XP registry and set everything manually
(with the help of TotalUninstall to "detect" what entries
should be changed) - hope that this will get iron out
eventually.

Yet, I am loving it because I can totally use your keyboard to
navigate the whole page and the links with the "find as you
type" feature - an unbeatable feature to me.

However, still can't get it to open EVERYTHING in tab - quite
annoying (click on an URL shortcut and it still launch a new
window). No extensions that I downloaded worked, has anyone
get any extensions that work in 9.1?

How are you managing to use my keyboard?

Nope. I'm sticking with 0.8 until TBE comes out for 0.9.1. Only then will I
give it a try.

(This may also fix the issue you mention below) -
Firefox 0.9 and 0.9.1 for Windows incorrectly register themselves as the
default handler for HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and GOPHER transactions, causing them
to launch multiple windows or throw errors. This has been reported as bug
246078 and is also being discussed in a mozillaZine thread. This .REG file
should fix this problem on a given installation after you have told Firefox
to make itself the default browser.

Have you tried the 'Single Window' extension for 9.1? I've only switched to
Firefox in the last couple of days but it seems to be working correctly so
far. I have had Javascript windows pop outside of the tabbed browser but
that's all. e.g the 'UK Papers' link at http://www.sky.com/skynews/home

Do you have an example of an URL shortcut that creates a new instance of
Firefox, for testing?

No problems with the install and importing IE Bookmarks etc. was fine for me
under W2K. I was impressed that Firefox configured itself for Proxomitron
use automatically, too.

I too just started using FireFox a few days ago. No problems with
installation, or importing favorites.

I too was surprised to see FireFox configuered itself for Proxomitron. I
decided to try it out without Proxomitron. I am impressed that no popups
have gotten through. GeoCities banners are also blocked, but not quite as
cleanly as Proxo does it. Ofcourse third party banner advertisements are
displayed. All-in-all I am quite happy with the way FireFox works without
the assistance of Proxo.

Yes, I did, but no effect
Do you have an example of an URL shortcut that creates a
new instance of Firefox, for testing?

Basically, that is how it behaves:
When I click a link within a page, it open within its own
window but not a new tab (don't like that, no way to change it
even though I already choose an option to open URL as new
tab). Then whenever I press a button in a page that is
supposed to open a new window, it opens a new window but not
open a new tab. The only choice I have is to press the crl
button while clicking on the link. IMO, advertising itself as
a full tab browser, open as tab should be by-default, not with
an extra button or extension though ( . Finally, when one
clicks on any URL shortcuts in window (e.g., those in the
favourite folder of IE, or those that are on my desktop), a
new FF window popup even though I've already opened Ff. :-(
I was impressed that
Firefox configured itself for Proxomitron use
automatically, too.

Same here, quit impressive. However, the "superopener" filter
feature that I used with Proxo gives an extra sublink to open
all links in new window; when I was using GreenBrowser, it
works really perfectly in opening extra tabs in the same
window, no luck with Firefox for that.

Another thing is that I hope they will add a feature to open
extra tab without stealing the focus, so I can open more than
one tab branch out from the current page quickly.

I like FireFox very much, but their tab fuction really is not
working as advertised - both MyIE and GreenBrowser are much
better in their tab function :-(

Yes, that is in fact a major reason that I switched. I still
use Proxo with Firefox, but now I can set some sites that
doesn't work very well with my Proxo default setting to bypass
Proxo but still have the FireFox protection. It is really
great! Before I always need to bypass proxo, but the page
become too much without being filtered. Firefox make the page
cleaner even without extensive filtering.
Ofcourse third party banner advertisements are
displayed.

In Firefox, I right clicked those banners and tell firefox to
block them from their orginal sites. It works perfectly.

I use Proxo to switch proxies mainly and as a pop-up blocker/web cleaner
second.
Nuke Anything is a great extension for Firefox for killing anything you
don't like the look of.

Jordan...I am currently using 0.8 which I have already set to the default
brower. Will I still need to install the .reg file after install of 0.9.1???
I don't follow the mozilla board, but I do love their browers. ;)

I'll give you the best answer I can think of Andy: maybe :)

After you install 0.9.1, try launching an internet shortcut from your
desktop. If you get an error, you'll need to install the .reg file. Or click
on a web link from your mail client. If you get several windows opening,
you'll need to install the file. But it does no harm to install it without
checking anything because all it's doing is correctly setting Mozilla as
your default browser.

I meant Firefox, not Mozilla ;)

Yep! :)
Tabbrowser Preferences:
http://www.pryan.org/mozilla/site/TheOneKEA/tabprefs/

In the Options you can set your preferences widely.
You have also the option "Prevent pages from opening new windows when
clicking links".
It works like a charm!

Yes!! Use find as you type to find one instance of the word, then press
f3 to search again.

Hmm.

The 3 main extensions that do it were already posted
they are from simplest to most complicated.

Single window extension
Tab browsing Preferences
Tab browsing extensions

All 3 don't work?

It already does.

Is there any "official" word on why it is not at update.mozilla.org? I
mean any word from the folks actually running mozilla.org -- I've heard
all the stuff about TBE being extension non grata among some devs, but
never read anything definite from them.

The second one was the first tried but it didn't work and the
second one didn't work either. Then today just download the
Tbp again and the full version freeze firebird on startup but
the lite version works. Never tried the third one. But I am
fine now as the lite tbp does everything I need. I am happy
firefox fan now :-D

Piro has always maintained TBE on it's own site because the it has a
support forum and so on that few other extension developers have.
