USB 2.0 PCI Card Problem

You mean the seller sent you something other then what he had listed for
sell?

They should still fit in. Do you have the card in right?

I just got a USB 2.0 PCI card and installed it. However, I can't plug in any
of my USB devices. It seems that the slats on the back of my case are too
narrow because the USB plugs run vertical instead of horizontal and the USB
device plugs won't fit in. I bought this thing off Ebay (I know, not a good
idea) and even the picture the seller had listed had the plugs running
horizontally. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Here's a link to the picture:

Thanks.

I positively have the card in right. The problem is that the plugs where you
plug in a digital camera for instance, are positioned so that they are vertical
instead of horizontal. So the frame on the back of the computer case is in the
way of the camera's plug fitting in there. Looking at the picture the seller
had, you can see that the plugs are horizontal, so there would be no problem
getting the camera plug to fit in there.

I've never seen one with the jacks vertical. Also of note that the seller
charges 8.25 percent CA sales tax. The sales tax here is 7.25-7.75,
depending on where you live. I haven't seen it as high as 8.25. Seller must
be pocketing the extra.

I did try a USB plug between the slats on my Chieftec case and it did fit.
Maybe if you loosen the screw on the card and try to center the plug between
the slats?

I would contact the seller and ask for the product they advertised,
pictured. Their concept of "no refunds" cannot apply when they didn't
sell you the product advertised, unless they made specific mention
that the picture wasn't representative of actual product.

At the very least, if the seller won't resolve this for you, then you
ought to leave feedback, at a minimum advising others of these odd
cards... I know I wouldn't want to buy one of those.

I've never seen a card with horizontal plugs though, and can't
understand why it would be constructed like that unless there were too
many plugs to fit any other way.

Running horizontally? That's because the card is laying DOWN...
horizontal!

Doesn't the card look like the one in the picture? If you stand the
card on its edge...with the bent tab toward the ceiling...don't the
tabs run vertically?

Has anyone ever heard of this?

What kind of case do you have? Is it a full-size case?...or a desktop
space saver?

At any rate, the horizontal or vertical position of the receptacle
should not stop the plug from fitting. You did try giving the plug a
half turn...correct? They only fit one way.

I've never seen one with the jacks vertical.

I know, isn't that really odd? Every card I've seen pictured has the jacks
horizontal. I had to explain to the seller in 4 emails what I was talking
about before he got it. He claimed that the one he sent me was their "older"
model. He has offered to refund my money, so I'm sending the card back to him
today.

The sales tax here is only 6%. But maybe it really is 8.25% in CA? I've seen
a couple of other listings where the sellers are stating the 8.25%.
I did try a USB plug between the slats on my Chieftec case and it did fit.

Thanks, I did try that but no luck. I think the jacks are actually just a
touch bigger than the slat opening. Meanwhile, since I'm going to be getting a
new card, I wondered if you or anyone else has recommendations as to brand.
I've seen ones that have the VIA chip, there's the Belkin brand, one with a ALi
M5273 chipset, or the Buslink brand. Any comments?

Thanks again!

No, it is not the one that's pictured. It's the oddest thing but when the card
is laying down, the jacks are vertical. The seller claimed that the one
pictured was their "older" model than the one he sent me. Anyway, he's offered
a refund so I'm sending it back.

I have a full-size case. The problem is because the jacks are vertical, the
case's framing blocks a small enough portion of the jack so that the plug from
the camera (or any device) will not fit, no matter which way I turn it. Any
card I've seen a picture of has the jacks horizontal when the card is laying
flat. The one I got must be a reject, LOL

After 4 emails back and forth with the seller, explaining what exactly the
problem with the card was before he understood what I was trying to say, he
offered to give me a full refund so today I'm sending it back.

Fortunately I haven't left feedback for him yet. I'm going to wait until I
make sure I get my refund from him.

My thinking is these were rejects. I mean it makes no sense to put them in
that way. Every other one I've seen pictured has the jacks exactly as the
seller's picture (running horizontally when the card is flat). I looked at all
my computers and this card wouldn't have worked in any of them. Very strange!
What I also find strange, and this is in all the USB cards I've seen that offer
5 ports is that one of the ports is internal. What possibly would get hooked
into an internal port I wonder?

Thanks for your reply!

Why would you send it back? lol You only paid $5 for it...and it'll
cost you at least half that much to ship it back!! Just put it in a
junk pile! lol

At any rate...

Why not just cut the dividers out of the case. They don't hold
anything anyway. All they are is spacers for keep things outa the
case. Just take a pair of tin snips and cut out the metal on the case
on each side of the USB card...at the very top and at the very bottom.

After you get the card installed, if there's too much of a gap on
either side to suit you, you can simply cover it with some duct tape.

Or...

Cut each side...top and bottom...about 3/4 of the way thru. Then you
should be able to take a pair of pliers and twist them...so that
they're out of the way.

It'd be a shame to waste that shipping charge...it was 3/4 of the
total cost of the card. And DON'T waste another $2.50...plus time and
shipping material...to send back a $5 card!! lol

Good luck.

Brand doesn't matter so much but those with NEC chipset seem to
perform best.

Thanks. You think better than VIA? I already have the VIA CPU type drivers
with an AMD processor.

The internal port is normally hooked up to a front panel
connector.

Ooooh, thanks! I knew there was a good reason for it.

I know! LOL After I posted, it dawned on me that after postage to send it
back, I'd only be ahead a couple bucks. So...I decided to install it in my
employer's computer. The framing on his case seems a little wider and I can
manuever the plugs into the jacks. He only has 2 USB devices and he leaves
them plugged in so I think it will work out fine.
Any

Sorry, it's already in my employer's computer. I think it was Dave who came up
with the idea that they didn't have enough room on the card to lay the jacks
horizontally so that's why they're vertical. He was right.

See above. But I have another problem maybe you could help me with. I have a
screw that is being used to mount my DVD drive in the bay (before I figured out
that I should have used the brackets that you insert on the sides of the
drive). Anyway, I had managed to get one screw in before I realized all this
and now the screw head is stripped. I have tried everything to get it out with
no luck. I even took it to a local shop and the tech told me "this is a job
for a handyman". So....he was no help. Just wondered if you or anyone else
had any ideas how to get the screw out. Thanks! The reason I want the screw
out is the drive isn't in their solid and it seems to be vibrating a lot.

I should have been more clear. I live in CA. Good that you are getting your
money back.

1. Grab the head with a small pair of channel locks and turn it out.

2. Sears sells a set of 3 screw extractors...that I use all the time.
$20 for the set...less when on sale. They work great. You can use
them in a drill, in a power screwdriver, or by hand.

Hard drive, etc.

Do you want front connections?...or rear connections?...or both?

They sell all kinds of different configurations. One that they sell
has 4 connections in the front of the case...2 in the back. The front
4 installs as a tray into the 3 1/2" bay.

I guess I never understood these kinds of eBay purchases. The cost of
living must be different where you are...from my area. These things
sell for $14.95 on average here...and you can see what yer gettin'.

Anyway...good luck.

Thanks. You think better than VIA? I already have the VIA CPU type drivers

The USB chipset need not be related at all to the motherboard
chipsets, and in this particular case the Via USB2 chipset has been
demonstrated to be slower... it'll work, just lower throughput, no
reason to get the Via chipset cards if the NEC versions are easily
enough attainable and relatively close in price.

Thanks so much for your input. I found cards with both the VIA and the NEC and
I'm going to order the NEC. The price difference is only a few dollars.
Thanks again! One thing though about the Cendyne with the NEC chip, it says
"IBM compatible" but then says "Pentium". I have an AMD processor, so does
this matter? Here's where they have the cards:
